Designing Support for Colorectal Screening Decisions
Principal Investigator: S. Wackerbarth, PhD
Co-Investigators: J. Joyce, MD, & M. Love, PhD
Funding source: AHRQ Building Research
Infrastructure and Capacity (S. Fleming, M. Love)
A project using information gleaned from
interviews with primary care providers and their patients to
design and evaluate decision aids that can be used by
providers and patients to inform their decisions about the
recommendation and actual use of colorectal cancer screening
tests.
Participatory Development of a Generic Detailing Program
with a Primary Care Research Network
Co-Principal Investigators: J. Costich, JD,
PhD & P. Dassow, MD, MSPH
Funding source: AHRQ Building Research
Infrastructure and Capacity (S. Fleming, M. Love)
Preparatory work for a large-scale project
that will implement and evaluate the distribution of generic
drug samples in primary care practices. This first project
aims to assess KAN clinician members' prescribing behaviors,
use of drug samples, their recommendations for the most
suitable drug classes for generic samples, and their
interest in further participation in the planned project;
then to develop specific arrangements for sample
acquisition, distribution and monitoring.
Identification
and Management of Familial/Hereditary Cancers in Primary
Care: Survey of Primary Care Physicians
Principal Investigator: K. Kelly, PhD
Co-Investigators: M. Love, PhD, M. Andrykowski, PhD, & K.
Pearce, MD, MPH
Funding source: National Cancer Institute
(NCI) Special Populations Networks
This project will assess knowledge and
comfort-level of primary care clinicians in Kentucky with
the detection and management of relatively common familial
cancer syndromes.
Enabling

Co-Directors: Kevin Pearce, MD, MPH and
Michael King, MD
Funding source(s) Kentucky Academy of Family
Physicians and the UK Dept. of Family and Community
Medicine
Demonstration pilot
project that with the goal of developing and testing a
sustainable service to help primary care physicians in small
practices efficiently improve measurable quality in their
practices, and promote quality improvement (QI) research.
The service is based upon modern principles of QI and
change facilitation for small organizations. In addition to
direct support from KAN personnel, eight participating
practices have access to personalized telephone, email and
web-based support for their QI efforts. The pilot project
is focusing on diabetes management.
