Message From the Chair

Department Chair:   Dr. Fred de Beer

Welcome to the Department of Medicine of the University of Kentucky. Ours is the largest department in the College of Medicine and the University. We have a wonderfully diversified Faculty with strong research programs in cardiovascular diseases, nutrition, bone metabolism and several other areas. Our teachers are among the strongest I have encountered in any academic institution and they conduct well-funded research program in methods of medical education. Our clinical programs are vigorous and growing. The Department is fortunate to be financially stable and to be experiencing steady annual growth in research and clinical revenues. The Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean have made substantial commitments to the expansion and strengthening of Cardiovascular Diseases, Gastroenterology and Oncology.  Virtually every division has added new faculty with new areas of interest, and several have established new research and clinical programs.

I appreciate your interest in the Department of Medicine. Our objectives are consonant with the threefold mission of the College of Medicine: excellence in teaching, research and patient care. We display an unusually good balance of the three. I hope you will take a closer look.
