Hospital Infection ControlFaculty of the Division of Infectious Diseases serve as Hospital Epidemiologists in charge of infection control at both the UK Hospital and the Lexington VA Medical Center. Dr. Malkanthie McCormick directs infection control at the UK Hospital, a 435-bed hospital with approximately 125 ICU beds including a neonatal intensive care unit, burn unit, and bone marrow transplantation unit. A 10-bed ward is dedicated to patients who need negative pressure airflow as part of the management of infections transmitted by the airborne route. Dr. McCormick’s staff includes 2 infection control nurses. Dr. Martin Evans directs infection control at the adjacent Lexington Veterans Affairs Medical Center, a 290-bed hospital with 3 intensive care units and active home antibiotic services. Dr. Evans, along with 2 infection control nurses, run a vigorous program that participates in the CDC’s National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System. Dr. Evans is nationally recognized as a leader in the use of gene therapy for infection control. He has been the organizer of gene therapy conferences and an invited speaker at numerous national conferences and workshops. For a bibliography, click here.
