Infection Prevention and Control

Faculty of the Division of Infectious Diseases serve as Hospital Epidemiologists in charge of infection control at both the UK Hospital and the Lexington VA Medical Center.

The UK Hospital, is a 435-bed hospital with approximately 125 ICU beds including a neonatal intensive care unit, burn unit, and bone marrow transplantation unit. A 10-bed ward is dedicated to patients who need negative pressure airflow as part of the management of infections transmitted by the airborne route.

Dr. Martin Evans is the Associate Director of the VA’s MRSA Program Office.  He oversees a nationwide program funded by the Veterans Health Administration Central Office to decrease MRSA healthcare infections.  On a local level, Dr. Evans is the Associate Director of Infection Control and Prevention for the UK Enterprise along with Dr. Chris Nelson.   His current laboratory research interest is focused on applications of infrared thermography to problems in clinical microbiology.
