On completion of IBS, students select their doctoral program
based on research interests and mentoring relationships in one
of seven departments:
Following IBS, an additional year of departmental coursework is generally
required for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, after which students must pass a
qualifying examination. The most important aspect of the doctoral program is an
independent research project under the direction of the student’s mentor. The
PhD degree normally requires four to five years to complete.
Each student’s doctoral program is tailored to the individual’s
research interests and career goals based on departmental and
Graduate School guidelines. Training in the use of research
equipment, in oral presentations, and in multifaceted uses of
computers in modern biomedical research is an integral part of every
program.
Our graduate students have many and diverse opportunities to
interact with established investigators in their field of study,
both at UK and at regional, national and international conferences
where they present their research, participate in workshops and
conduct research as visiting graduate students.
