PA 5K/1-Mile Fun Walk/Cornhole Tournament a Success

The PA Class of 2011 sponsored the second annual Chick-fil-A Physician Assistant Day 5K/1-Mile Fun Walk/Cornhole Tournament, held on September 12, 2009 at the UK Coldstream Park. The class sought to promote the physician assistant profession within the community in preparation for October 6, National Physician Assistant Day.

Stephanie Cruse and Sarah McClellan coordinated the event, with the assistance of Jennifer George, Rebekah Basham, Nathan Li, Lindsay Pilgrim and Jessica Amburgey. The class of 2011, including students from both the Lexington and Morehead campuses, contributed to fundraising and participated in the day's festivities. Participants received an event T-shirt and water bottle, and lunch was provided by the main sponsor of the event, Chick-fil-A.

Approximately 50 walkers took part in the 1-Mile Walk and 120 runners participated in the 5K race. Additionally, 12 cornhole teams participating in the tournament. All together approximately 200 individuals participated in the event. Last year's race, the first time this event occurred, drew 100 participants.

Thousands of dollars from the event's proceeds were returned to participants in the form of prizes. Two hundred dollars was donated to The Refuge Medical Clinic (www.refugeministriesky.org), a non-profit free clinic which provides medical and dental services to uninsured residents of Jessamine and Fayette counties. The remainder of the proceeds were donated to the Joseph Hamburg Student Society (JHHS), the official UK Physician Assistant Student society, and will be used to fund JHSS sponsored activities, including mission trips. The society aims to support academic achievement and clinic excellence in the PA students of the University of Kentucky Physician Assistant Studies Program.
