Congratulations to Ryan Husak & Johanna Hoch, MS, ATC for receiving the 2012 Robinson Graduate Award for Research Creativity! Ryan was recognized for his scientific inquiry & passion for clinical research at the master’s level in the Communication Sciences & Disorders program; he secured a fellowship to attend the 2012 Clinical Aphasiology Conference in May where his research findings will be presented. Johanna was recognized at the doctoral level for her persistence & commitment to the research process & for her exemplary funding record. While in the Rehabilitation Sciences Doctoral Program, her scholarly activity includes the following: 10 published abstracts, 3 manuscripts in review, a paper accepted for publication in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, & served as author/co-author on 15+ presentations. We’ve been on a roll with providing opportunities for these students; let’s keep up the momentum! Staff Council is now accepting nominations for three new Staff Council members. Each member's term will last three years in duration beginning July 1, 2012. All nominations should be sent to Kristie Bruner no later than Monday, May 7^th. For more information regarding the expectations of Staff Council members please feel free to contact Kristie Bruner.

Please extend your congratulations to undergraduate researcher Ryan DeCoster for winning an Undergraduate Research and Creativity grant (through the UK Office of Undergraduate Research) via his project "Effects of immediate and delayed message on inflammatory and reparative pathways in damaged skeletal muscle." His mentor is Dr. Tim Butterfield.

Rehabilitation Sciences doctoral candidate Melba Custer, MS, OT/L will defend her dissertation on April 27, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the College of Nursing, rm. 504. Click here for more information.

2012-2013 Education Enhancement Grants Awarded

The purpose of the Education Enhancement Grants is to “provide CHS faculty with resources to support the development and implementation of innovative and educational initiatives to improve student learning.” These grants provide up to $3,000 to complete proposed projects. At the conclusion of the project period, awardees provide a written report of project outcomes to be posted on the Academic Affairs website. In addition, recipients prepare a blitz report for presentation at a spring faculty meeting. Michelle Butina, Anne Olson, and Lynn English, along with Gilson Capilouto made up the grant review committee.

The grants represented an interesting and exciting array of topics and disciplines. Recipients and Titles of funded grants for 2012-2013 are as follows:

Faculty Nominated for Teachers Who Made a Difference

The UK College of Education will host its 14th Annual Teachers Who Made A Difference banquet on April 28th from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. This year CHS is very pleased to say that three faculty members have received a nomination for this special award. Let us all congratulate Dr. Tim Uhl, Professor Pangela Dawson and Dr. Andrew Wyant for receiving a nomination from one of their students. Click here for more information.

eIAF Deadline Rule Reminder

Please see the following important reminder and clarification regarding OSPA’s three day deadline rule for electronic internal approval form (eIAF). The College of Health Sciences’ internal deadline is one week in advance of OSPA’s three day rule.

IMPORTANT REMINDER! Internal Approval Form Required for Extramural Proposal Submission
Beginning with applications due on or after April 2, 2012, no proposal shall be submitted to any external funding agency unless a fully executed e-IAF has been received by OSPA at least three business days prior to the sponsor's published deadline. For more, read the pdf memo.

Example of three business days: If the sponsor has a deadline for electronic proposal submission of 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, the completed e-IAF is due in OSPA before 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8.
April 2 is a Monday. If the sponsor has a deadline for electronic proposal submission of 5:00 p.m. on April 2, a completed e-IAF must be received by OSPA before 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 29.
A fully executed e-IAF means that the PI, all co-Investigators, applicable chairs, directors and deans or associate deans have certified electronically through workflow in MyUK. Once the final certification has been made, the PI and OSPA will be notified by email.

Voice Mail Upgrades

University of Kentucky Information Technology (UKIT) is upgrading both main campus and UK HealthCare employee voice mail during spring/summer 2012.

Over the past year, a select group tested Exchange voice mail, which alerts users of voice mail through Outlook email. The voice mail message can be reviewed through an office telephone, computer, cell phone, or other mobile device. In addition, the system provides speech-to-text in the voice mail notification email. This allows users to read voice mail when listening is unavailable.

The Exchange voice mail system also provides users the following features:

· Remotely listening to email being read using text to speech;

· Calling into the system and asking for the system to read your calendar schedule; and

· Calling into the system and creating meetings and writing emails orally.

UKIT will migrate users from the existing WindStream voice mail platform to Exchange voice mail without a charge. To schedule a voice mail upgrade, contact Denise McCarthy at 218-0484.

UK Women's Forum Accepting Nominations

The UK Women's Forum Board is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2012-2014 term are being accepted now through Friday, April 27. Please consider nominating yourself to champion women's issues at UK. The Women's Forum Board membership is open to all regular staff and faculty, men and women. Research Ethics Lecture Series

The UK Program for Bioethics is pleased to announce the Research Ethics Lecture Series, the newest addition to bioethics education at UK. Click here for information on the inaugural presentation.

Kentucky Innovations Conference

Registration is now open for the Kentucky Innovations Conference being held at the METS Center in Erlanger, Kentucky on May 16, 17 and 18.

The Kentucky Innovations Conference is focused on examining topics related to P-12, adult and post-secondary education. Presentations, panel discussions, poster sessions and corporate partners will provide conference participants the opportunity to discuss the scholarship of teaching and learning, the latest technologies, best practices and to share innovative instructional techniques. The conference will begin on Wednesday morning, May 16^th with presentations focused on pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching and learning. On Thursday, May 17^th, the presentations will focus on eLearning and instructional technologies used for teaching and learning. Then on Friday, May 18^th, the presentations will focus on Information Technology topics.

Carolyn Jarmon, Vice President of the National Center for Academic Transformation will be joining us on Thursday, May 17 as the featured keynote. Carolyn has given numerous presentations and been published widely on the topics of effective delivery of student services and distance education.. We are also planning a KyRON presentation and a CIO panel on Friday.

Information is continuously being updated on the Kentucky Innovations website http://kyinnovations.org/. Even though we are still in the planning stages watch for information on birds-of-a-feather discussions.

The registration site http://kyinnovations.org/index.php/register is now open to accept registrations. You will receive an invoice within a day or so once you have registered. Credit card payments and checks will be accepted.
