Educational Enhancement Grants 2012

Faculty-

The call for Educational Enhancements awards for 2012-2013 is now open. The application can be accessed via the College website at http://www.mc.uky.edu/healthsciences/academic/about.html by selecting “Education Enhancement Grants” and then “Information and Application”.

The committee asks that you please consider the following:

  1. All applications will be considered; however, the committee is especially interested in reviewing proposals that attract new revenue/additional students through distance learning, summer school or winter session.
  2. A Gantt chart is now required so faculty can provide a timeline for completion of project tasks and activities (template under ‘Information and Application’).
  3. In addition to the required written report, recipients will prepare a brief oral report for presentation at a College meeting. This report does not need to be submitted to the ADAA and is meant to showcase project objectives and results, and stimulate additional ideas.

Website Updates Underway

Our temporary web hire has completed a number of updates to the site ranging from fixing links to content updates. Some of these updates include support files, such as images and Word documents.  Divisions or areas with published changes include the CHS home page, web pages within physical therapy, research, medical lab sciences, and communication sciences and disorders. Content changes continue to be made and we will keep staff and faculty informed of changes weekly via Footnotes so be sure to check back next week.

Faculty Nominated for Teachers Who Made a Difference

The UK College of Education will host its 14th Annual Teachers Who Made A Difference banquet on April 28th from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. This year CHS is very pleased to say that three faculty members have received a nomination for this special award. Welcome Virginia Valentin, PAS Faculty

We extend a warm welcome to new PAS Faculty member, Virginia Valentin. Professor Valentin graduated from nursing school from Weber State University and while working as a Registered Nurse she earned a BS in Psychology from the University of Utah. She later earned a Master's Degree from Barry University Physician Assistant Program in 2007. Before coming to UK, Professor Valentin worked in the areas of oncology, neurosurgery and hematology/bone marrow transplant. She brings nearly two decades of experience in health-related fields. Welcome Professor Valentin!

eIAF Deadline Rule Reminder

Please see the following important reminder and clarification regarding OSPA’s three day deadline rule for electronic internal approval form (eIAF).  The College of Health Sciences’ internal deadline is one week in advance of OSPA’s three day rule.

IMPORTANT REMINDER!   Internal Approval Form Required for Extramural Proposal Submission
Beginning with applications due on or after April 2, 2012, no proposal shall be submitted to any external funding agency unless a fully executed e-IAF has been received by OSPA at least three business days prior to the sponsor's published deadline. For more, read the pdf memo.  

  • Example of three business days:  If the sponsor has a deadline for electronic proposal submission of 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, the completed e-IAF is due in OSPA before 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday,   May 8.
  • April 2 is a Monday. If the sponsor has a deadline for electronic  proposal submission of 5:00 p.m. on April 2,  a completed e-IAF must be received by OSPA before 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 29.  
  • A fully executed e-IAF means that the PI, all co-Investigators, applicable chairs, directors and deans or associate deans have certified electronically through workflow in MyUK. Once the final certification has been made,  the PI and OSPA will be notified by email.

Be a Bone Marrow Donor

Many ancient superstitions and myths surround Friday the 13th that simply aren't true and the same can be said about myths that surround bone marrow donation. 

Myth: Donors have to pay for the donation procedure.
Fact:  Donors never pay for donating and are never paid to donate. All medical costs are paid by the patient’s medical insurance or by the patient, sometimes with assistance from the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). The NMDP, which operates the Be The Match RegistryŽ, reimburses donors for travel costs, and may reimburse other costs on a case-by-case basis. Although a donor never pays to donate, many people do pay the tissue-typing cost when they join the registry.

Local folks:  Join us Friday, April 13th from 8am – 4pm in the BBSRB atrium (between the College of Pharmacy and BBSRB) to become a potential donor AND at Tin Roof Friday, April 13th at 7:30pm to hear Ryan Hamner, a four-time Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor, perform for us.

Women's Forum Announces Educational Assistance

University of Kentucky's Women's Forum is offering Educational Assistance Awards. The award will provide $250 reimbursement to eligible UK employees to assist with the cost of books and/or other materials, supplies and fees related to their UK coursework, complementing the existing tuition waiver program for UK employees. Voice Mail Upgrades

University of Kentucky Information Technology (UKIT) is upgrading both main campus and UK HealthCare employee voice mail during spring/summer 2012.

Over the past year, a select group tested Exchange voice mail, which alerts users of voice mail through Outlook email.  The voice mail message can be reviewed through an office telephone, computer, cell phone, or other mobile device.  In addition, the system provides speech-to-text in the voice mail notification email.  This allows users to read voice mail when listening is unavailable. 

The Exchange voice mail system also provides users the following features:      

ˇ    Remotely listening to email being read using text to speech;

ˇ    Calling into the system and asking for the system to read your calendar schedule; and

ˇ    Calling into the system and creating meetings and writing emails orally.      

UKIT will migrate users from the existing WindStream voice mail platform to Exchange voice mail without a charge. To schedule a voice mail upgrade, contact Denise McCarthy at 218-0484.

Kentucky Innovations Conference

Registration is now open for the Kentucky Innovations Conference being held at the METS Center in Erlanger, Kentucky on May 16, 17 and 18.

The Kentucky Innovations Conference is focused on examining topics related to P-12, adult and post-secondary education. Presentations, panel discussions, poster sessions and corporate partners will provide conference participants the opportunity to discuss the scholarship of teaching and learning, the latest technologies, best practices and to share innovative instructional techniques. The conference will begin on Wednesday morning, May 16th with presentations focused on pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching and learning.  On Thursday, May 17th, the presentations will focus on eLearning and instructional technologies used for teaching and learning. Then on Friday, May 18th, the presentations will focus on Information Technology topics. 

Carolyn Jarmon, Vice President of the National Center for Academic Transformation will be joining us on Thursday, May 17 as the featured keynote. Carolyn has given numerous presentations and been published widely on the topics of effective delivery of student services and distance education.. We are also planning a KyRON presentation and a CIO panel on Friday.

Information is continuously being updated on the Kentucky Innovations website http://kyinnovations.org/. Even though we are still in the planning stages watch for information on birds-of-a-feather discussions. 

The registration site http://kyinnovations.org/index.php/register is now open to accept registrations. You will receive an invoice within a day or so once you have registered. Credit card payments and checks will be accepted.
