Back to Top Gilson Capilouto Receives GrantGilson Capilouto was awarded a grant from the Office of International Affairs, Education Abroad. The grant, in the amount of $2,000 is titled 'Education Abroad Clinical Experience in Communication Sciences and Disorders' and will be used for travel to Haifa, Israel. Back to Top Halloween Traveling Trays & Silent Auction ItemsToday is the last day of Staff Council's Traveling Trays. Goodies may be purchased on the 1st, 2nd,and 4th floors (CTW 123, Sarah Ross’ desk, CTW 205, Renee King’s desk, CTW 206, Kristie Bruner’s desk, and CTW 433/435, Margo Ubele and Amy Confides desk in the lab). The 2012 UK/United Way campaign is now underway and runs through October
31. This year UK and the United Way have implemented a new e-pledge system. To
be able to make your pledge go to this site:
http://www.uky.edu/UW/. Follow the instructions to get your login and
password. There will still be a solicitor (Marie Poole, Anna Moore, and
Theresa Cook) for your department so be sure to ask them for assistance if
you have any problems making your donation. Please take a minute to check out the United Way
website www.uwbg.org, and see the types of
programs you can assist with your donation. Any amount donated, large or small,
does make a difference. The 2012 UK goal is $450,000 and the College of
Health Sciences goal is $3,000. We surpassed our goal last year and hope to reach or
surpass our goal again this year. University Announcements
2012 Education Innovation SummitThe University
Senate Council announces two open
forums to give faculty the opportunity to voice thoughts on how the first
and anticipated second round of budget cuts have or
will impact the University’s academic mission. These
forums will take place as follows: The University of
Kentucky College of Education invites you and your colleagues to attend the
2012 Education Innovation Summit, a professional gathering co-sponsored by
AdvancED Kentucky focused on creative ideas, research and innovation to help
transform P-12 and higher education in Kentucky, on November 29-30, 2012, at
the Lexington Convention Center. This year’s theme is Local Focus…Global
Impact, focusing on developing a deeper understanding of how to narrow the
global achievement gap and better prepare our students for a highly competitive
and challenging future. Among the featured
speakers is Tony Wagner. Dr. Wagner’s interactive presentation will draw from
his two most recent books, Creating Innovators: The Making of Young
People Who Will Change The World, and The Global Achievement Gap: Why
Even Our Best Schools Don’t Teach the New Survival Skills Our Children
Need—and What We Can Do About It. Global and local business and P-12 and
higher education leaders will participate, including UK President Eli
Capilouto; Gene Wilhoit, Executive Director, Council of Chief State School
Officers; Ron Townsend, Executive Vice President of Battelle’s Global
Laboratory Operations; Herb Miller, President, Columbia Gas; Bob Quick,
President and CEO, Commerce Lexington, as well as over 100 school leaders
from the Kentucky P20 Innovation Lab’s Next Generation Leadership Academy,
who work daily to create innovative learning environments for all students
to succeed in school, college and life. The Summit will
launch new and innovative programs and standards such as Kentucky STEMx
Network and the Next Generation for Civic Readiness - The State Standards
for Social Studies, as well as concluding the Summit with an Education IDEA
Festival led by Kris Kimel, President, Kentucky Science and Technology
Corporation, and other entrepreneurs. Winter Term Spanish Language Study AbroadThe Office of International Affairs is now accepting applications for studying Spanish Language this winter term in Latin America.
