Back to TopBrad Schwarz sworn in as Lieutenant Colonel with 123rd Airlift Wing, KY National GuardCHS is proud to announce that Brad Schwarz, Director of Physician Assistant studies was sworn in September 28th as Lieutenant Colonel of the Kentucky Air Guard. The ceremony was exceptional as Brad's colleague, CHS PA Professor Mike Cooper, served as the officiating officer. Mike Cooper is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves, 445th Airlift Wing, Wright Paterson AFB. Both Brad and Mike have served in Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom. Please join us in congratulating Brad in this momentous occasion. CHS is increasingly honored to be home to faculty and staff who proudly serve our country as service members. Back to TopAlumni AwardsThe Distinguished Service Awards are a long-standing tradition presented annually to honor and recognize alumni and friends of the university who have provided extraordinary dedication and service to UK and the alumni association. The Joseph T. Burch Young Alumni Award is named in honor of a longtime UK administrator who spent the better part of his life in service to UK students. The award began in 2002 as a way to recognize alumni who are 10 years or less out of college and currently work on behalf of young people through the university, the association, their alumni club or the local community. Recipients of both awards are honored each year during the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors Summer Workshop. Do you know someone who deserves recognition? Please use this form to nominate a UK alum or friend of the university for this honor. In doing so you will play a part in helping to recognize individuals who have provided extraordinary service and shown tremendous dedication to the UK Alumni Association and the University of Kentucky. All forms must be filled out completely and submitted online or returned to 400 Rose Street, King Alumni House, Lexington, KY 40506-0119, no later than Nov. 1, 2011. 3rd Annual KARRN Conference- Another Success!The 3rd Annual Kentucky Appalachian Rural Rehabilitation Conference was held Tuesday, September 20, at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset, KY. Issues related to spinal cord injury and stroke were discussed. The Conference was a great success and included 198 participants including healthcare providers of multiple disciplines (PT, OT, CSD, Physicians, Nurses, PA), persons with SCI or stroke and their caregivers, students from the UK DPT and RHB Doctoral programs, students from the EKU OT program and other community partners. This year participants came from as far as Madisonville in Western Kentucky and Louisville. Join us for a reception to visit with two physicians from this rehabilitation center as well as CHS Eduglobal partner Mike Arnall, PT. Dr. Milia will give a 30 minute presentation focused on neurological rehabilitation programs at the Istituto. Light hors d'eouvres will be served. Oncology Program at Duke University’s Comprehensive Cancer Institute, will
deliver the keynote address at the UK Markey Cancer Center’s Lung Cancer
Symposium. D’Amico’s presentation is titled “Thoracoscopic Lobectomy
for Locally Advanced Lung Cancer.” A graduate of Harvard and Columbia University,
D’Amico joins 23 other health care specialists in presenting the latest
research on the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, including the
findings of the National Lung Screening Trial.

Support the PT Race for the Cure TeamUK Physical Therapy students Nicole Acosta and Lori Beth Lile have created a team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Lexington. The team will represent UK PT and is formed in honor of Lynn English, whose son, Adam, is the Chair for the Lexington event. The UK PT Race for the Cure team is asking for the support of the CHS family. Their goal is to raise $2,500. They also welcome new team members, who can register at the link below. From Nicole: "Proceeds from our community allow people without insurance to obtain a mammogram and also supports research to find a cure for breast cancer. I know most of us know someone who has been through the ordeals of breast cancer and together we can help raise money so we can find a cure soon!" To make a donation go to the

New Online Subagreement Request FormWhen a sponsored project award includes a collaborating entity, the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration prepares and issues a subaward agreement to the other party. The Principal Investigator begins the process by submitting a completed Subagreement Request Form to OSPA. The form includes the necessary information to prepare the subagreement such as the scope of work, budget and collaborating investigator contact information. In the past, the form was in pdf format and required a live signature. It has now been converted to an on-line form with an electronic signature. The PI is identified by logging into the site with his or her MyUK logon ID and password. The new format is available for immediate use at the OSPA website on the Forms page http://www.research.uky.edu/ospa/forms.html. Directly below the form is a document with instructions. Digital Measures Training Dates ScheduledWe have scheduled two training sessions in early October for any faculty member who still needs to learn how to enter data into the Digital Measures system. Faculty and staff members who would like a “refresher” are also welcome to attend. The training dates are: o Wednesday, October 5th, 1:00 – 2:30 PM, CTW 109 (IT Suite) o Tuesday, October 11th, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM, CTW 109 (IT Suite) If you plan to attend one of the trainings, please email Rena Murphy at rena.murphy@uky.edu with the training date and time you would like to attend. If you are unable to attend either training due to scheduling conflicts, please contact Rena as well to identify an alternative training method. Back to TopEnglish-speaking Union Scholarships for Summer Study in the United KingdomThe Kentucky Branch of The English-Speaking Union will award a limited number of scholarships to qualified Kentucky college students for courses offered at three institutions in the United Kingdom in the summer of 2012—Cambridge University, Oxford University, or Edinburgh University. Scholarship awards will include tuition, lodging and two meals daily for three-week courses at the institution chosen by the scholarship winner. Courses offered are listed on the ESU website; they typically include English Literature, History, and Social Sciences. Scholarships also include one week’s lodging in London and a cash allowance which may or may not cover the costs of travel and incidentals (in recent years, the allowance has been approximately $1,800).
