New College Grants Officer

Nan Rice

Please extend a warm welcome to our new College Grants Officer, Nan Rice, who begins on February 2.

Nan comes to the College of Health Sciences from the Department of Pediatrics with UK Healthcare. She has extensive experience with grant pre-award procedures and providing support to research investigators. Prior to working in Pediatrics she also assisted the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department with research and grant related functions. Nan will be located in the Office of Research, CTW 105.

Wyant Produces College’s First iTunesU Content

2011-01-28_Physiology-Scholar

Andrew Wyant, MD, has started producing the college’s first content for iTunesU. Currently, two 30-minute lectures accompanying his Principles of Human Physiology course are available, with several more in production.

iTunesU enables colleges and universities to easily share audio and video content to mobile devices and computers through iTunes software. UK is highly invested in utilizing this technology to improve student learning, as well as reach potential students and the community. Content can be made freely available to the general public, or can be restricted behind a linkBlue login.

Change in February College Meeting

Rather than the standing College Meeting on February 18th, faculty and staff will meet in two separate locations to discuss issues important to each group.

The Dean and Associate Deans will not be in attendance at either meeting.

The faculty discussion will be led by the CHS Senators (Andreatta, Dupont, & English) and will meet in the CTW 014.

The staff discussion will be led by Staff Council Chair (Meredith Houlihan) and the location will be announced prior to the meeting. Please plan to attend and bring any issues you would like to discuss with your colleagues.

Marie Poole will still send out the monthly report prior to the meeting. If you have any questions, please contact the dean.

Committee Service Opportunities

As you each think about your next year’s DOE, please keep in mind that several positions will need to be filled on a variety of committees. Some committee members are elected and some are appointed. If you are interested in serving on any of the committees below, please contact Anne Olson so that your name can be placed on the ballot for elections to be held in March.

These committees are an integral part of our joint faculty efforts to self governance, and so we are each obligated to serve to the best of our ability. Additionally, committee work is a great way to get to know other faculty within our College. Please consider serving the CHS in whatever capacity your DOE allows.

Catherine has been providing part-time assistance for College of Health Sciences students and faculty since early September 2010, with the help of Dr. Heather Bush. On-line Pay Statements

As part of the effort to “Go Green”, the University is adopting online pay statements for all employees – and therefore eliminating paper statements. This is better for the environment and it reduces costs.

Dance Blue 2011

The CHS Ambassadors would like to extend an invitation for you to volunteer at this year’s DanceBlue marathon. We are proud to host one of the largest student-run philanthropy events held at UK and in the state of Kentucky, and seek to make this year’s event an even bigger success as we enter the sixth year of the marathon. DanceBlue is Feb. 18 and 19, 2011, and runs from 8 p.m. Friday until 8 p.m. Saturday.

Help us by volunteering at the marathon. Whether it is through aiding with hydration stations, food areas or security, each and every volunteer is greatly appreciated and vital to making DanceBlue a success. This is such a special event for many students, and we are excited for your participation to help make an even bigger difference in this year’s event.

Learn More About Studying & Teaching Abroad

The Office of International Affairs is hosting a Spring Fair on Wednesday, February 2, 11 a.m – 3 p.m. in the small ballroom of the UK Student Center.

This event is designed to encourage students to explore opportunities for studying abroad this summer. It’s also a perfect chance to learn about faculty-led programs, get expert advice on dozens of other summer offerings, learn about an array of international internship opportunities, and chat with students who have been abroad.

OIA is also holding a Faculty Information Session on teaching abroad opportunities from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on the same day as the Spring Fair in the small ballroom of the Student Center. Many UK faculty members who are leading summer 2011 programs will be present to introduce their upcoming programs. Also, many partner organizations will be present to discuss customizing new education abroad programs for UK students in a wide array of fields and destinations. With such programs, faculty compensation and expenses are typically included and programs may be facilitated at many times during the academic year, including winter intersession.

“How to Build a Dinosaur” Presentation

Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 • 7:30 p.m. • Singletary Center

Can dinosaurs be brought back to life? Paleontology, the study of ancient life, may have the answer, and no one has probably done more to further this kind of understanding in the field than Jack Horner, a world-renowned paleontologist who studies dinosaurs. Jack is coming to Lexington in February at the invitation of the Kentucky Section, American Institute of Professional Geologists, to tell us about the dinosaurs that still live with us — the birds — and how we might use them to create modern dinosaurs.

The Office of Student Involvement is beginning to plan the 7th annual University Leadership Summit. As many of you know, Summit is a program that brings together undergraduate student leaders from across campus who work to create positive change for the University. The deadline to nominate a student for Summit 2011 is Friday, February 18, 2011. Because we know each of you works with outstanding undergraduate students, we ask that you carefully consider those students who would benefit the most from this program and who would contribute the most to the University community.

STEM Education Conference

Friday, April 29, 2011 – Student Center

The Second Annual STEM Education Conference at the University of Kentucky will focus on STEM research, teaching and learning and engagement with goals of generating new partnerships and collaboration across the STEM disciplines.

Faculty, K-12 educators and STEM undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to present STEM Education related research or experiences. Presenters may choose among three formats: paper presentation, “round table” discussion, and poster presentation.

Keynote Speaker President Lee T. Todd, Jr.
“Supporting STEM Initiatives in Kentucky and Nationwide”
President Todd will discuss how we are attempting to leverage STEM initiatives to positively impact the STEM pipeline in Kentucky and across the nation. The President will speak about various means of supporting the “Educate to Innovate” initiative as well as the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities’ Science and Mathematics Teacher Imperative.
