2011-2012 Distribution of Effort Process

It is time for faculty to begin preparing their 2011-2012 Distribution of Effort Forms. Each faculty member will receive an individual e-mail from Rena with the DOE Memo outlining the timeline (pdf), Instructions for the DOE Calculation Worksheet (pdf) and DOE Worksheet (Excel). Please be sure to read all materials before beginning the process. There have been some changes based on the feedback you have provided to us.

The forms will also be located on the Academic Affairs website under the Distribution of Effort tab.

Fourth Annual CHS Education Enhancement Grant Competition

Do you have an idea for an innovative educational initiative? If so, you should apply for a CHS Education Enhancement Grant. The purpose of these Grants is to provide CHS faculty with resources to support the development and implementation of innovative educational initiatives to improve student learning.

Grant proposal must be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs no later than Thursday, March 31, 2011 for activities to be completed during the 2011-2012 academic year (end date no later than June 30, 2012).

Please submit your application electronically using the template found on pages 2-3 of the document linked below. These materials are also available by checking on Information and Application under the Education Enhancement tab on the CHS Office of Academic Affairs webpage.

CHS HeartWalk Team

It’s that time of year again and we are putting together a team for the 2011 Start Heart Walk. The event is on Saturday, April 23rd at 10 a.m.

Our team is listed under UK Healthcare, College of Health Sciences and is named “Hearts & Soles.”

The walk is a wonderful way to get exercise, spend time with your coworkers & the community and bring awareness to the issues of Heart Disease.

The UK Healthcare tent will provide lunch after the walk. Last year it was barbeque.

The walk is for everyone. Please bring your family, friends and pets. Strollers are welcome. Pets are welcome but must be on a leash.

Join the team.

The goal is to raise $1,000 for our team. Help us reach that goal by making a donation on line or by check. Checks need to be made payable to The American Heart Association.

Please pass this along to anyone that wants to join our team. You don’t have to work here to join our team.

Decoding the Disciplines Workshop

What does it mean to think like an anthropologist, a physicist, an economist, a nurse? How do faculty across the disciplines translate those modes of thinking into teaching introductory courses? Faculty and Graduate Students at UK will have the opportunity to explore these questions in a series of CELT-sponsored workshops.

On March 28, Professor David Pace, a history faculty at Indiana University will share the results of the decade-long, faculty-driven Decoding the Disciplines project at Indiana. He will lead UK faculty through the process of “decoding” their disciplines. The first step of the process asks faculty to consider: where are students getting stuck in your courses? Faculty are then encouraged to explore in some depth the strategies that they, as experts, take to solve such problems and to design an assignment that simulates this process for students. Two follow-up workshops will be held in April and early May to share the outcomes of the project.

The Decoding the Disciplines project has been praised for making transparent the ways in which faculty think as practioners of their academic disciplines. Ideally timed with UK’s new GenEd initiative, Decoding the Disciplines will generate opportunities for faculty to work collaboratively to create innovative introductory courses that will help to recruit students into the majors.

Please contact David Sacks by March 21 to register. Faculty are encouraged to register as teams of two for the March 28th workshop, though individual applications will also be accepted. Food and intellectual stimulation provided.

Brown Bag Luncheon

The Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Office of Academic Affairs presents a brown bag luncheon in the Commons at noon on Monday, March 14, featuring Dr. Seyhun Topbas.

Dr. Topbas is a Professor of Speech and Language Pathology at Anadolu University in Eskisehir, Turkey, where she can been a pioneer of the Speech and Language Therapy/Pathology profession.

In addition, Dr. Topbas is also the…

  • Founder of the first formal University Center in Speech Language Disorders
  • Initiated the Masters and Doctorate degree programs in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Department Head of Speech and Language Therapy under the Institute of Health Sciences
  • Director of Education, Training and Research Center for Speech and Language Disorders (DILKOM)

Internationally, Dr. Topbas is a member of the International Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics Association (ICPLA) and the International Associate of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP). He is also an international affiliate of the American Speech, Hearing and Language Association (ASHA) and an elected member of ASHA's International Issues Board. She has authored several articles and chapters in international and national journals and has written and edited three books in speech and language disorders. She has received four awards for her publication and the Turkish Academy of Sciences for Quality Publications in Social Sciences and Humanities.

Carol S. Adelstein Outstanding Student Award

Nominations are being accepted for the 2011 Carol S. Adelstein Outstanding Student Award. The deadline is 5 p.m. March 22. The award is presented annually to the student with a disability who best serves as an inspiration to the UK community through excellence in any or all of the following areas: academic achievement, leadership, extracurricular activities, and social and/or personal qualities.

Nominees may be full or part-time students. Nominations should include the student's name and a letter of support addressing their qualifications to be considered for the award.

Nominations should be mailed to the Disability Research Center, 2 Alumni Gym 0029 or by e-mail. For more information, call 257-2754.

College of Medicine Dean Candidates Visiting Campus

Candidates for the position of Dean of the College of Medicine will be visiting campus for interviews in the next few weeks. An open forum has been scheduled with each candidate for faculty, staff and students. You are invited to meet with each candidate at the time and place indicated below. STEM Education Conference

Friday, April 29, 2011 – Student Center

The Second Annual STEM Education Conference at the University of Kentucky will focus on STEM research, teaching and learning and engagement with goals of generating new partnerships and collaboration across the STEM disciplines.

Faculty, K-12 educators and STEM undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to present STEM Education related research or experiences. Presenters may choose among three formats: paper presentation, “round table” discussion, and poster presentation.

Keynote Speaker President Lee T. Todd, Jr.
“Supporting STEM Initiatives in Kentucky and Nationwide”
President Todd will discuss how we are attempting to leverage STEM initiatives to positively impact the STEM pipeline in Kentucky and across the nation. The President will speak about various means of supporting the “Educate to Innovate” initiative as well as the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities’ Science and Mathematics Teacher Imperative.
