Great Gerontology Student Happenings in 2010
- Julie Brown, Gerontology Student, was elected as the Tech Chair for the Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization of the Gerontological Society of America
- Amber McIlwain, Gerontology Candidate, received a Dissertation Enhancement Award.
- Amanda Sokan, Gerontology Candidate, spearheaded World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Event in Lexington, KY on June 15th. The mayor was present and made a proclamation, several speakers were involved, and the elders present shone flashlights commemorating those who are/were abused.
- Courtney Ortz, Gerontology Candidate, accepted a position at Western University in Bowling Green. We wish you all the best, Courtney!
- Fran Vorsky, Gerontology Student, was selected for an adjunct faculty member position at Transylvania University. Great work, Fran!
- Tina Kruger, Katie York, and Amanda Sokan have hung artwork from the Donovan Scholars in the hall outside the gerontology suites. The work is not to be missed. Please come by for a viewing when time permits. The exhibit will be a changing one. It has added much to the third floor Wethington hallway. Many thanks for the time and effort it took you three!
- Niki Munk, Tina Kruger, Katie York and Shani Bardach all received a Donovan's Scholarship Award.
- Niki Munk received a UK Women's Club Award and the Lee and Everett Smith Award at the Student Mentoring Conference.
Great Core Gerontology Faculty Happenings
- Graham Rowles spent seven weeks in Europe where he spent time in Heidelberg , Germany (at a conference), Newcastle University, England (as a visiting scholar), and in Plymouth, England (visiting with his family).
- Rodney Guttmann received a Holsinger Teaching Award in the College of Medicine and a pilot Alzheimer’s Disease Center research award with Harry Levine.
- Joy Jacobs-Lawson has been invited to give the Distinguished Alumni Lecture at Oklahoma State University (September) and a keynote for the Oklahoma Teaching of Psychology Conference (September).
- John Watkins, Faika Zanjani, and Amy Hosier (former UK Gerontology Ph.D. Student and new Faculty Affiliate) received a grant award for Memory Banking (USDA and UK’s HEEL Program).
- Brock Symons is an investigator on the grant Contribution of Altered Muscle Hemodynamics to Fatigability in Older Persons with and without Fibromyalgia.
- Pam Teaster received the Kentucky Gerontology Association for Gerontology Award for Distinguished Educator, an award for Collaboratively Combating Elder Abuse in Kentucky (UK Commonwealth Collaborative Award, a 4th year renewal for Empowering Elder Abuse Organizations Through Local, State, and National Efforts (Administration on Aging); and an award for Financial Elder Abuse Redux (MetLife Mature Market Institute).
Great Gerontology Programmatic Happenings
- Brian Downer, Twilla Parr, and Stephen Perry will begin pursuing the Ph.D. in Gerontology this fall semester.
- John Kim and Joanna Aalboe will begin pursuing the new Dr.PH with a concentration in gerontology this fall semester.
- Jennifer Newton, Pamela Phares and Emily Vaught are new Graduate Certificate in Gerontology students.
