In her undergraduate career, Katie focused on biology with emphasis on the neural and behavioral sciences. Although her undergraduate work was with C. elegans genetics, Katie decided that the worms didn’t hold conversations as well as people did. Her work at the Adult Day Center of Somerset County (a non-profit medical senior citizen day care center) had been providing conversation opportunities since she was 16, and she knew, with all the infinite wisdom of a teenager, that she wanted to work with older people for the rest of her life. This drive and motivation to work with older adults did not fade, and she currently is working to better understand aging and how she can help older adults experience a high quality of life. Katie’s current research interests include quality of life of the older person and long-term care alternatives. Still recovering from her college basketball career, Katie enjoys a sloth-like existence with her rabbit, Bernadette, and dog, Fatty.
