Shani is a second year student in the Gerontology PhD program. She completed her M.A. in Psychology at Wesleyan University. She came to the program at UK with extensive experience as a research assistant on health-related projects, including studies looking at patient navigation and follow-up to abnormal pap smears, health locus of control and recovery from major depression disorder, and breast cancer survivors’ health monitoring visits. Her current areas of interest are health communication, preventive health behaviors, and individuals with multiple chronic conditions. She hopes to increase understanding about how older adults conceptualize different diseases and prevention behaviors to effectively design prevention and disease management messages that will help older adults maximize their health. While at UK, she has researched how residents of rural Appalachia with multiple chronic conditions manage their health and has explored the influence of a power training exercise intervention on the cognitive and physical functioning of individuals experiencing mild cognitive impairment. Outside of academia, Shani enjoys reading, swimming, tennis, crafts, volunteering at the Lexington Opera house, exploring Lexington with her husband, and spending time with her son.
