Brock Symons is an Assistant Professor in Graduate Center for Gerontology. Prior to arriving at UK, Dr. Symons was a post-doctoral fellow in the Division of Rehabilitation Sciences at The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas. During this time he investigated the mechanisms of skeletal muscle synthesis and nutritional supplementation (intact protein) to counteract the age-related loss of skeletal muscle (Sarcopenia) and promote anabolism. Additionally, he explored the effects of bed rest on skeletal muscle function and functional ability in older adults. His research interests include the preservation of lean body mass through the promotion of skeletal muscle anabolism, the restoration of skeletal muscle function, the enhancement of functional daily performance, and the development and refinement of methods used for such studies in older adults. Other research interests include the potential benefit of high force eccentric contractions on the debilitating effects of sarcopenia and the use of essential amino acids to prolong the time to exhaustion.
