Mega-Kudos to and palm-slapping noise for Rebecca d’Angelo, who has just been informed that she has received GSA’s 2006 ESPO Interdisciplinary Paper Award. The award honors her central work on the paper: “Associations Between Domains of Permeability and Quality of Life Among Residents of Senior Care Communities.”  Co-authors included J. Watkins and G.  Moser Earns National American Heart Association Honor!!

Debra Moser is the recipient of the 2006 Katharine A. Lembright Award from the American Heart Association Council on Cardiovascular Nursing. The award acknowledges her contribution and achievements in the field of cardiovascular nursing research.  Moser is a professor and Linda C. Gill Chair in the University of Kentucky College of Nursing.  Congrats Debra!!

Welcome Dr. Zanjani!!

We are pleased to announce that Faika Zanjani joined the Graduate Center on September 1, 2006.  Her research focuses on the general topic of developmental-health psychology with emphasize on four specific areas: aging, health behaviors, behavioral disease-management/prevention, and mental health and substance misuse.  Faika received her degree Penn State and just completed a post-doc at the University of Pennsylvania. Welcome Dr. Carol Palmer!!!!

Carol Palmer successfully defended her dissertation “The Nature and Extent of Personal, Social, Environmental, and Work Influences on Physical Activity Among Women” on July 17, 2006.  Her committee members included Drs. John Watkins (chair), Pamela Teaster, Anne Harrison, Joy Jacobs-Lawson, Nancy Stiles, Dorothy Brockopp, and Sherry Warden (outside examiner).  Carol is currently an assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University.  Congrats Carol!!

Kim Stansbury successfully defended her dissertation “African American Clergy: An Exploration of Pastoral Care to Mentally Distressed Elder Congregrants” on July 17, 2006.  Her committee included: Drs. Travonia Brown-Hughes successfully defended her dissertation “Examining Diagnosis-Seeking Pathways among African American Caregivers for Family Members with Alzheimer’s Disease” on July 12, 2006.  Her committee included Drs. Mitzi Schumacher (co-chair), Deborah Danner (co-chair), Nancy Schoenberg, John Watkins, Kenneth Tyler, and Rosalind Harris (outside examiner).  Tre has accepted a Lyman T. 2006 Graduate Center for Gerontology Graduation Celebration!!

This year the Graduate Center celebrated the accomplishments of 12 students. Heidi Ewen, Jennifer Gatz, Travonia Hughes, and Kimberly Stansbury were the doctoral candidates honored in the celebration and presented with the traditional Graduate Center Rocking Chair.  Each is set to receive her doctorate in Gerontology in 2006.  Kelly Allen-Bryant, Marie Burns, Nancy Derderian, Marie Gillen, Sarah Perkins, David Pope, Tanika Redmond, and Kelly Weber were acknowledged as completing the Graduate Certificate in Gerontology in 2006.  Click here to see pictures from the Celebration.

2006 College of Public Health Graduation Ceremony!!

Four doctoral students and six faculty members from the Graduate Center participated in the 2006 College of Public Health Graduation Recognition Ceremony.  The gerontology doctoral candidates hooded during the ceremony were Heidi Ewen, Jennifer Gatz, Travonia Hughes, and Kimberly Stansbury.  Congratulations to you all!!  Click here to see more pictures from the ceremony.

Keith Knapp, who received his PhD from the Graduate Center in 2005, is the recipient of the "Distinguished Administrator of the Year Award from the American College of Health Care Administrators.  He will receive the award the 2006 meeting in New York.  Congrats and Best Wishes Keith!!

On April 26, 2006, Gamma Mu inducted 16 new members. LaVona Traywick was the recipient of the 2006 Southern Gerontological Society’s Student Paper Award.  Her paper was titled “Exercise Attitudes and Experiences of Female Heart Attack Survivors.”   Congrats LaVona!!

Corinne’s presentation at the 2006 Student Mentoring Conference earned her the Lee Presentation Award.  Her paper was titled “Modeling the Relationship between Caregiver Role Overload and Depression in Cancer and Caregiving.”  Her co-authors were Dr. Nancy Schoenberg and Heidi Ewen.

Kim’s Off to Washington!!

Kim Stansbury has accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position in the department of Social Work at Eastern Washington University. She is set to begin in September, 2006. Kim has a MSW from the University of Southern Mississippi and will graduate with her PhD in Gerontology this summer.  Congratulations and Best Wishes Kim!!

2006 AGHE Meeting

At the 2006 annual meeting of AGHE, Katie Nikzad and Heidi Ewen (both students in the program) presented a paper titled Gerontology Doctoral Students’ Perceptions of Interdisciplinary Training.  Drs. Graham D. Rowles and John F. Watkins also had several presentations covering doctoral education in gerontology, the importance of mentoring in gerontology programs, and presented a paper with Monica Underwood (our administrative coordinator) on a system we have developed to evaluate graduate training in gerontology.  Pictured from left to right are Graham Rowles, Katie Nikzad, Heidi Ewen, and John Watkins.

Mr. DGS himself was selected by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education as a 2005 Fellow.  Fellows are selected based on outstanding leadership, teaching, researcher, and educational training including the development of new programs.  Kudos to you John!!!!

The Graduate Center for Gerontology was ranked second among the top 10 UK graduate programs for percent increase in the number of reported student publications, presentations and projects.

GSA 2005

Once again the Graduate Center made an excellent showing at GSA.  Four core faculty, four affiliate faculty, and 13 students presented in a total of twenty-two sessions at the GSA.  In addition, many of these individuals were involved in various board meetings including editorial board meetings.  We also had a number of students attend who did not present.  Click here to see some snap shots.

Farewell Suzanne!

Dr. Suzanne Tyas has accepted an associate professor position, Health Studies and Gerontology and Behavioural Neuroscience position at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo Canada.  Although she will be missed, we are excited for her and wish her only the best on journey back home to Canada.  Best wishes Suzanne!!

Arts and Aging is a hit!!

The Graduate Center for Gerontology hosted the first Arts and Aging at the Radisson Hotel.  About 30 artists from around the Lexington Area participated in the event.  Participants included artists, musicians, and actors.  The event was organized SPO Gammu Mu chapter.  Click here to see pictures.

Memory Walk 2005 was a hit!

Team Gerontology showed strong participation in the 2005 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. We were able to collect $650.00.  Thanks to all those involved in the Walk and a special thanks to Captain Kara for being our fearless leader.

Shannon Mathews Gets a Promotion!!

Upon defending her dissertation Shannon Mathews (2005 graduate) became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Studies at Towson State University, Towson, Maryland.  Best of luck!!

Congratulations to 2002 Cohort!

The 2002 Cohort of Doctoral Students from the Graduate Center for Gerontology received the 2005 Research Award from the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC), a constituent group of National Council on the Aging (NCOA).  The award was presented at the NISC Leadership Awards Reception and Silent Auction, held on March 11, 2005 in Philadelphia, PA, as part of the 2005 American Society on Aging (ASA)-NCOA Joint Conference. The cohort was also asked to present their research findings and provide a workshop at the ASA/NCOA joint conference.  Four members of the cohort (LaVona Traywick, Dory Marken, Shannon Bowles, & Amy Hosier, pictured above) gave an hour and 30 minute presentation and workshop.  Congratulations to the entire cohort:  Keith Anderson, Shannon L. Graduate Center was well represented at GSA 2004!

 

At the 2004 meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in Washington, DC students and faculty presented 26 papers and posters, many of which were collaborative efforts.  We even had several students attend just for the experience.  Our goal for next year is to have an even bigger showing.  Click here to see some pictures.   

Good Work Team Gerontology!!

Team Gerontology raised $778.00 for Alzheimer’s research.  This is the second year that the Graduate Center has participated in the annual Memory Walk.  Special thanks to SPO and Amy Hosier for their efforts in getting the team organized!

Congratulations Dr. Janice M. Paul!

Janice M. Paul successfully defended her dissertation, “A Grounded Theory Approach Examining Nursing Home Use among Blacks: What We Know, What We Thought We Knew and Where We’re Headedon Wednesday August 25, 2004.  Her committee members included John Watkins (Chair), Nancy Schoenberg, Pam Teaster, John Wilson, Rosalind Harris, and the outside examiner Deborah Reed. Well done, Janice, and major congratulations!!!!!

Congratulations to Beth Hunter who was recently awarded the American Psychological Association’s Division 20 national award for the best pre-doctoral proposed research for her work on legacy.  Beth was awarded a certificate and a monetary award her achievement.

Anna Genevieve was born at 12:03 am on June 27.  She weighed 7 lbs and was 19 ¼ inches long. Mom, Dad and baby are all at home and doing well.

Katie Elected ESPO Secretary!

Katie Nikzad was recently elected to serve as the secretary for the Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization division of the Gerontological Society of America.  Congratulations Katie!

Congratulations Jennifer, Beth, Denise, Kim, & Laura!

Major congratulations to Jennifer Gatz, Beth Hunter, Denise Lewis, Kim Stansbury and Laura Stephenson who are the winners of the National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Science Program Excellence through Research Award for their project, “A Community-based Solution to Elders’ Health Disparities.“  They will receive this award at the national meeting of the Association in October.  This is some well-deserved national recognition for a group of our colleagues who make us proud.   Very well done! 

Congratulations Dr. Plahuta!!!!

Janica Plahuta successfully defended her dissertation on May 28, 2004. Her committee was chaired by Distinguished Faculty Member, Dr. Daniel Richardson.  Distinguished Faculty Member, Dr. B. Jan McCulloch (now at the University of Minnesota), Dr. Maria Boosalis, Dr. Nancy Stiles, Dr Dennis Karounos and Dr. Raymond Reynolds served as members of Janice’s Committee.  Dr. Debra K. Moser (College of Nursing) served as External Examiner.  Janice now moves on to a post doctoral position at Northwestern University.  Way to go, Janice!!!

Ph.D. Program is now the Graduate Center for Gerontology!

On May 4 the Ph.D. Program in Gerontology officially became the Graduate Center for Gerontology.  This is an exciting time of change and growth in the program.  The Center will retain its University wide focus and outreach and will be part of the newly formed College of Public Health

Dr. Laurie Russell Hatch Receives A & S Award!

Laurie Russell Hatch was selected by a faculty committee to be one of only two the recipients of the 2004-2005 Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award.  She will receive a $1,500 award from the College.

Dr. Dan Richardson receives Provost’s Award!

Dan Richardson has been chosen to receive the 2004 Provost's Award for Outstanding Teaching.  This is a tremendous honor, the highest tribute UK pays its faculty educators.  Dan is the sole recipient from among all Regular Title Series faculty campus-wide.

Jennifer, Beth, Kim, and Laura Receive Research Excellence Award from the State!

Jennifer Gatz, Beth Hunter, Denise Lewis, Kim Stansbury, and Laura Stephenson’s project won the "The Research Excellence Award of the Kentucky Extension Association for Family and Consumer Science."  As the state winner, their project now advances to the National Competition.  Congratulations and Good luck in the national competition

Denise receives the 2004 Southern Gerontological Society (SGS) Student Paper Award!

Denise Lewis received the 2004 SGS Student Paper Award for her paper titled “Rural Environment and Social Networks: The Importance of Connections for Aging in the Best Place”.  Congratulations Denise!

Lavona wins the Student Mentorship Conference Poster Competition at SGS!

LaVona Traywick received first-place honors in the Student Mentorship Conference Poster Competition for her presentation titled “Barriers to Hospital Arrival when Experiencing a Heart Attack”.  Congratulations LaVona!

Katie asked to give keynote speech at SGS 2005 Meeting!  

Katie Nikzad received honorable mention for her presentation titled “Sensory and Physical Stimulation Activities Used as Interventions for Individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease.”  Katie’s presentation was so well received that she was invited to give the 2005 Student Keynote Speech.  Great Work Katie!

Graham Rowles president elect for SGS!

Graham Rowles was elected to serve as the next president of the Southern Gerontological Society.  Congratulations Graham!

Memory Care Center of Excellence receives Award!

The Memory Care Center of Excellence will be featured in the July-August issue of Contemporary Long Term Care Magazine.  The Center recently received the Specialty Category Award.  Keith Knapp, a student in the Gerontology Program, is the CEO of the Center.  Individuals from the Ph.D. Program in Gerontology and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging were involved in the development of the Center.

Pam Teaster was invited to be on the Board of Trustees of the National Guardianship Foundation.

Kim Stansbury successfully completed her qualifying exam

Kim passed her quals on December 5, 2003.  Her committee members are Mitzi Johnson, Pam Teaster, Laurie Hatch, Debra Harley, and Sonja Feist-Price.  Her dissertation is titled “African-American Ministers: Perceptions, Knowledge, and Skill of mental health issues pertinent to older African-Americans”.

New Grant Received

Faculty member Pamela  B. Teaster  recently learned that she has been awarded $170,547 by the Retirement Research Foundation for a research study, “Wards of the State:  A Study of Public Guardianship.

Office Coordinator Karen Thompson has taken a new position outside of the University and will be leaving October 10th.  We will miss her greatly.

Charity Walk Success

The UK Gerontology team participated in the 2003 Memory Walk for the Alzheimer’s Association last Sunday.  Team members raised $905 for the AA!  Student members of the team who walked on Sunday were Katie Nikzad, Maile Brown, LaVona Traywick, Amy Hosier, Hege Ravdal,Jennifer Gatz.  In addition, Joy Jacobs-Lawson represented the faculty.

Beth Hunter Passes Quals

The Gerontology Department is pleased to report that Beth Hunter passed her qualifying examinations and was advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. Degree on Thursday, October 30, 2003.  Beth’s committee comprises Dr. Graham D. Rowles (Chair), Dr. John F. Watkins, Dr. John Van Willigen and Dr. John F. Wilson.  Beth’s dissertation project is tentatively entitled: “Beyond Generativity: Leaving a Legacy.”

The Gerontology Program is happy to welcome the arrival of Dr. Joy Jacobs-Lawson to the Faculty.  Dr. Lawson is a graduate of Oklahoma State University, with interests in psychology of aging and retirement decision making.
