2006 Graduate Center for Gerontology Graduation Celebration!!
This year the Graduate Center celebrated the accomplishments of 12 students. Heidi Ewen, Jennifer Gatz, Travonia Hughes, and Kimberly Stansbury were the doctoral candidates honored in the celebration and presented with the traditional Graduate Center Rocking Chair. Each is set to receive her doctorate in Gerontology in 2006. Kelly Allen-Bryant, Marie Burns, Nancy Derderian, Marie Gillen, Sarah Perkins, David Pope, Tanika Redmond, and Kelly Weber were acknowledged as completing the Graduate Certificate in Gerontology in 2006. Meeting
At the 2006 annual meeting of AGHE,
Katie Nikzad and Heidi Ewen (both students in the program)
presented a paper titled Gerontology Doctoral Students’ Perceptions of Interdisciplinary
Training. Drs. Graham D. Rowles and John F. Watkins
also had several presentations covering doctoral education in
gerontology, the importance of mentoring in gerontology
programs, and presented a paper with Monica Underwood (our
administrative coordinator) on a system we have developed to
evaluate graduate training in gerontology. Pictured from left

GSA 2005
Once again
the Graduate Center made an excellent showing at GSA. Four core
faculty, four affiliate faculty, and 13 students presented in a total of
twenty-two sessions at the GSA. In addition, many of these individuals
were involved in various board meetings including editorial board

Farewell Suzanne!
Dr.
Suzanne Tyas has accepted an associate professor position, Health
Studies and Gerontology and Behavioural Neuroscience position at the
University of Waterloo, Waterloo Canada. Although she will be missed,
we are excited for her and wish her only the best on journey back home
to Canada. Best wishes Suzanne!! |
Arts and Aging is a hit!!
The
Graduate Center for Gerontology hosted the first Arts and Aging at the
Radisson Hotel. About 30 artists from around the Lexington Area
participated in the event. Participants included artists, musicians,

Memory Walk 2005 was a hit!
Team Gerontology showed strong
participation in the 2005 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. We were
able to collect $650.00. Thanks to all those involved in the Walk and a
special thanks to Captain Kara for being our fearless leader.

Congratulations to 2002 Cohort!
The 2002 Cohort of
Doctoral Students from the Graduate Center for Gerontology received the
2005 Research Award from the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC),
a constituent group of National Council on the Aging (NCOA). The award
was presented at the NISC Leadership Awards Reception and Silent
Auction, held on March 11, 2005 in Philadelphia, PA, as part of the 2005
American Society on Aging (ASA)-NCOA Joint Conference. The cohort was
also asked to present their research findings and provide a workshop at
the ASA/NCOA joint conference. Four members of the cohort (LaVona
Traywick, Dory Marken, Shannon Bowles, & Amy Hosier, pictured above)
gave an hour and 30 minute presentation and workshop. Congratulations

of America in Washington, DC students and faculty presented 26 papers
and posters, many of which were collaborative efforts. We even had
several students attend just for the experience. Our goal for next year

Good Work Team Gerontology!!
Team Gerontology raised $778.00 for Alzheimer’s
research. This is the second year that the Graduate Center has
participated in the annual Memory Walk. Special thanks to SPO and Amy
Hosier for their efforts in getting the team organized!

award for the best pre-doctoral proposed research for her work on

Major congratulations to Jennifer Gatz,
Beth Hunter, Denise Lewis, Kim Stansbury and Laura Stephenson who
are the winners of the National Extension Association for Family and
Consumer Science Program Excellence through Research Award for their
project, “A Community-based Solution to Elders’ Health
Disparities.“ They will receive this award at the national meeting
of the Association in October. This is some well-deserved national
recognition for a group of our colleagues who make us proud. Very
well done! |
Congratulations Dr. Plahuta!!!!
Janica Plahuta successfully defended her
dissertation on May 28, 2004. Her committee was chaired by Distinguished
Faculty Member, Dr. Daniel Richardson. Distinguished Faculty Member,
Dr. B. Jan McCulloch (now at the University of Minnesota), Dr. Maria
Boosalis, Dr. Nancy Stiles, Dr Dennis Karounos and Dr. Raymond Reynolds
served as members of Janice’s Committee. Dr. Debra K. Moser (College of
Nursing) served as External Examiner. Janice now moves on to a post
doctoral position at Northwestern University. Way to go, Janice!!!

Ph.D. Program is now the Graduate
Center for Gerontology!
On May 4 the
Ph.D. Program in Gerontology officially became the Graduate Center for
Gerontology. This is an exciting time of change and growth in the
program. The Center will retain its University wide focus and outreach
and will be part of the newly formed College of Public Health
|
Dr. Laurie Russell Hatch Receives A & S Award!
Laurie Russell
Hatch was selected by a faculty committee
to be one of only two the recipients of the 2004-2005 Arts and
Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award. She will receive a $1,500
award from the College.

Dr. Dan Richardson receives Provost’s Award!
Dan Richardson has been chosen to
receive the 2004 Provost's Award for Outstanding Teaching. This is a tremendous honor, the
highest tribute UK pays its faculty educators. Dan is the sole
recipient from among all Regular Title Series faculty campus-wide.

Jennifer Gatz, Beth Hunter, Denise

Katie Nikzad received honorable
mention for her presentation titled “Sensory and Physical Stimulation
Activities Used as Interventions for Individuals with Alzheimer’s

she was invited to give the 2005 Student Keynote Speech. Great Work

Memory Care Center of Excellence receives Award!
The Memory Care Center of Excellence
will be featured in the July-August issue of Contemporary Long Term
Care Magazine. The Center recently received the Specialty Category
Award. Keith Knapp, a student in the Gerontology Program, is the
CEO of the Center. Individuals from the Ph.D. Program in
Gerontology and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging were involved in
the development of the Center. |

Charity Walk Success
The UK Gerontology team participated in the 2003 Memory Walk for the
Alzheimer’s Association last Sunday. Team members raised $905 for the AA! Student
members of the team who walked on Sunday were Katie Nikzad, Maile Brown,
LaVona Traywick, Amy Hosier, Hege Ravdal,Jennifer Gatz. In addition,
Joy Jacobs-Lawson represented the faculty. |

Passes Quals
The Gerontology Department
is pleased to report that Beth Hunter passed her qualifying examinations and
was advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. Degree on Thursday, October 30,
2003. Beth’s committee comprises Dr. Graham D. Rowles (Chair), Dr. John F.
Watkins, Dr. John Van Willigen and Dr. John F. Wilson. Beth’s dissertation
project is tentatively entitled: “Beyond Generativity: Leaving a Legacy.”
