Dr. Nancy Schoenberg 2007 Distinguished Affiliate Faculty!!
Dr. Schoenberg was selected to give the first annual Graduate Center for Gerontology Distinguished Affiliate Faculty Lecture. She gave a stellar presentation on October 30, 2007 on Aging and Engaging. She was also recently elected to serve as a Member at Large for the Gerontological Society of America. Congratulations Nancy!!

Welcome Dr. Marken!!
Let’s have some wall-shaking skin-smacking applause for Dr. Dory Marken who successfully defended her dissertation, “Beliefs of Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren in their Provision of Nutrition,” on October 4, 2007. Her committee included Drs. John Watkins (chair), Graham Rowles, Anne Peden, Maria Boosalis, and Malcolm Cutchin (UNC-Chapel Hill, outside examiner). Welcome Dr. Brock Symons!!
Brock Symons joined the Graduate Center Core Faculty on September 1st. His interests encompass the preservation of lean body mass through the promotion of skeletal muscle anabolism, the restoration of skeletal muscle function, and the development and refinement of methods used for such studies in older adults. Please be sure to stop by and welcome Brock to the Center.

Congrats Dory!!!
Congratulations are in order to Dory Marken, who has received the Myrle E. and Verle D. Nietzel Visiting Distinguished Faculty Program Award. This award is based on meritorious dissertation research and supports the appointment of a nationally/ internationally recognized scholar as the candidate's Outside Examiner for the dissertation defense. Dr. Malcolm Cutchin, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been appointed to this role on Dory's Committee. Way-da-go Dory!!! |

Woo Hoo for Niki!!
Niki Munk, first year graduate student, received the Ann and Everett Lee Student Presentation Award (1st Place) at the 18th Annual Southeast Regional Student Mentoring Conference in Gerontology and Geriatrics. She was also chosen to present the Student Keynote Address at the 2008 conference. This marks the first time that a student has received both of these top recognitions. WAY-DA-GO NIKI!!!!!! |
