The function of the Core Laboratory is to provide
sophisticated support
to GCRC protocols and
to develop or validate
new methods. In general,
routine tests (blood chemistries, hematological
determinations, and
urinalyses) are performed
in the hospital's clinical
chemistry laboratories. However, these
tests may be performed
in the Core Laboratory
when this is critically
important for timeliness,
when precise and reproducible
results are needed, or if patient
safety is at stake.
All current and potential GCRC investigators are encouraged
to inquire about any assay or analytical technique that may
prove useful in carrying out their
protocols. We
are always interested in developing new assays, or adapting
assays established in basic research or in a different branch
of medicine to
a specific clinical
research protocol. The experienced staff of the Core Lab will
work with investigators to prepare and test new assays for
use. Clinical
investigators are encouraged to consult with the Core Laboratory
Director, John Williams, PhD at
859-323-5049 x 231 or the Lab Supervisor, Ken
Westberry at 859-323-1329.
In addition to developing new assays, the Core Lab staff is very experienced in
providing a range of established assays, as well as
helping to decide if proposed assays are appropriate and assist in assembling
cost estimates for the research supply component of GCRC protocol budgets.
UK GCRC Core Laboratory performs RIAs, ELISAs and other diagnostic and research
tests. The Core Laboratory is both CAP and CLIA accredited.
