The National Institutes
of Health created General Clinical Research Centers (GCRC)
in 1960 to provide
the resources
necessary to support patient oriented research. The GCRC at the
University of Kentucky (UK)
was first funded
by the National
Center for Research Resources over 22 years ago. The UK GCRC
provides the clinical research
infrastructure
for investigators
to study normal human function, as well as the mechanisms of
treatment, and prevention of human
disease.
The Center is comprised of an 8-bed unit,
procedure rooms,
a specimen processing
laboratory, a metabolic
kitchen supported
by a research dietitian,
a conference room,
and a biochemical
assay laboratory.
GCRC personnel are available to provide expert
support in biostatistics,
informatics, body
composition and
functional assessment, and specialized
laboratory techniques
to assist with
project design
as well as implementation.
Inpatients and
outpatients are seen interchangeably on this unit located
in the hospital
on 5North. Additional
outpatient space
is available and
shared with the UK Clinical Research Organization
on the second floor
of the UK Clinic.
