EndoscopyIn October, 1995, the University Hospital opened the EndoscopyCenter, a major new state-of-the-art endoscopy facility. Nearly 7000 square feet in size, and built at a cost of nearly $2 million, the center provides a superb environment for advanced endoscopy and training. A full range of endoscopic procedures is performed at both the University and VA hospitals, totaling approximately 6000 annually. In addition to diagnostic upper endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, and colonoscopy with polypectomy, therapeutic procedures including sclerotherapy and band ligation, endoscopic sphincterotomy and biliary stenting, endoscopic bleeding management, and percutaneous gastrostomy are regularly performed. Five faculty members have particular interest and expertise in therapeutic endoscopy. Fellows are also exposed to computerized esophageal manometry, ambulatory pH monitoring, sphincter of Oddi manometry, enteroscopy, photodynamic therapy and endoscopic ultrasonography. All endoscopic procedures are directly supervised by Divisional faculty.
