The primary goals of this grant are to (1) train four family physicians
to be successful clinician-researchers, with an emphasis on aging
research, through a full-time two-year fellowship and MPH; and (2)

Through this planning grant a complete assessment will occur of the
members of the Kentucky Ambulatory Network (KAN) our Practice Based
Research Network (PBRN) in place since 2000 and funded through the
Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). We will assess the
current capabilities, needs, desires, and barriers related to the
adoption and implementation of computerized information and
communication technologies that would be useful for individual
practitioners and for our PBRN. This would result in the construction
of a realistic plan for building a network-side computerized data and
communications system, with evidence-adaptive decision support
components.

Funding is being provided to develop a rural training track in primary
care. Components of this track will begin in the 1st and 2nd year
(rural specific topics/groups associated with 1st/2nd year courses as
applicable) and will continue throughout and into the 3rd/4th years of
medical school. Recruitment for students interested in pursuing a
career in rural/primary care practices will begin with this year's
incoming 1st year class.

The long-term goal is to reduce the incidence and severity of
cardiovascular disease among high-risk patients treated in primary care
settings by improving their adherence to prescribed treatments. The
objectives of the study are to (1) test the effectiveness of an
original and practical intervention designed to foster the involvement
of a relative or friend in cardiovascular risk reduction for patients
with type 2 diabetes, focusing on using this type of social support to
improve adherence to prescribed treatments, and (2) investigate the
intervention’s theorized cognitive-behavioral mechanisms of action.
Title: Increasing Colorectal Screening Rates

This study will determine if targeted mail-out messages to patients can
lower barriers to colorectal cancer screening and increase screening
rates among women over age 50 who receive primary care. Funding was
awarded through the NIH sponsored University of Kentucky College of
Medicine training program “Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers
in Woman’s Health” (BIRCWH) program.

This study will describe the demographic characteristics and health
care needs of low-income adults who bring their children to rural
health care centers, toward developing an opportunistic mechanism for

The major goals of this project are to develop health services research
infrastructure and capacity at the University of Kentucky through
collaboration between its Center for Health Services Management and
Research and the Department of Family Practice. The two major
components are: (1) research training, mentoring, protected time and
pilot project seed funding for three junior family practice faculty
members; and (2) implementation of a pilot office systems intervention
research project to improve delivery of preventive services in
community primary care physician offices. This is a Building Research
Infrastructure and Capacity (BRIC) award.
