What is the International Program for 4th year students?

The purpose of the Primary Care/Community Medicine international elective is two fold. First, the elective will be an experience of primary care in an international setting. Students will choose one location from among the many sites that have already been pre-screened by the department and a COM oversight committee.  Second, the elective serves to encourage students to learn about the health systems in the host country. This is an immersion experience which will require the student to live in and learn from the community, about the communities' health and the health concerns of its people.

How do I apply to an International Program?

Step 1 Complete the application form (below) and send to the program staff at the address you find under Step 2.
Application Form (173KB)  (opens in new window)

NOTE:  This application form is for University of Kentucky College of Medicine students only.  If you are a student from another program interested in coming to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, please go to the Visiting Student  section of the College of Medicine's website.

Step 2 Send the completed application form from Step 1 to the following address:

Mailing Address:
Attn:  International Program Coordinator

University of Kentucky
Dept. of Family & Community Medicine
K302 KY Clinic Building
740 South Limestone
Lexington, KY 40536-0284

Fax: (859)323-6661  Email: predocfp@email.uky.edu

Step 3 Program staff will review the application you submitted and will be in touch with you.

Special note for M4 students:
Please submit the application form (
Step 1) at least six months to a year in advance of when you plan to complete the rotation.  Doing so will permit staff time to contact the host countries involved, to verify and confirm rotation availability and as well to schedule any pre-trip preparatory meetings (as needed). Program staff will be in touch with all students who have expressed interest in the international clerkship.  In the event the interest level exceeds either available sites or the sites ability to accommodate, all students will be contacted by program staff.  A lottery may be one of the methods used to determine student selection.

Participation flexibility is appreciated:  As with any elective such as this, funding support is always of concern for students and the College of Medicine.  While this program currently has funding to support students, the funds are limited.  The opportunity to participate in international electives is subject to multiple factors some of which are beyond the control of program staff and include funding and site/political stability.

Step 4

For students that are given approval to participate, the following required forms are needed. Be sure to sign where indicated and mail, fax or email the forms to the address listed in Step 2.
  Self-Assessment Medical Form (55.99KB)
  (opens in new window)
  MS Word Version (37 KB)

  Emergency Insurance Contact Form (67.85KB)

MS Word Version (45 KB)

  U.K. Release Form (60.59KB)
  MS Word Version (30 KB)

W-9 Form [required if receiving stipend/support]

Attention: Non-UKCOM/visiting students: As a general rule, students from other programs who are interested in this fourth year international clerkship are not accepted.  This is partly due to restrictions placed by the College of Medicine.  However, we do wish to encourage you to explore the web for the many international opportunities that do exist for students wanting to do international rotations.
