Program of Excellence (PoE) Awards - Family Medicine Interest Groups

What are the PoE Awards?
For five years the AAFP Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Network has recognized numerous FMIGs with the Program of Excellence Award for their efforts to stimulate student interest in family practice and family practice programming. The Program of Excellence (PoE) Award is awarded to 10 FMIGs that exhibit exemplary efforts in all of the following areas: infrastructure, student involvement/student retention, family practice advocacy, and community outreach/patient advocacy.

In addition, four categorical Awards of Excellence are awarded to FMIGs for individual programming that is exemplary. One award is awarded in each of the following categories: infrastructure, student involvement/student retention, family practice advocacy, and community outreach/patient advocacy.

All PoE and categorical award winners receive recognition at the National Conference of Family Residents and Medical Students, in Kansas City, Missouri. Some recipients may be invited to present selected FMIG program information to FMIG student and faculty leaders attending the National Conference of Family Practice Residents and Medical Students. This award does not provide financial support to attend the National Conference. Winners will also be spotlighted in the FMIG Newsletter, the Exchange, and on Virtual FMIG.

Scientific Assembly Grants for the AAFP Scientific Assembly

The Scientific Assembly is the national meeting of the American Academy of Family Practice, geared toward continuing medical education for practicing physicians and residents. Up to 15 pre-Assembly awards of $1,000. The purpose of the grant is to help defray travel expenses of bringing an exhibit to Assembly. Exhibit application must be submitted by a family practice resident or medical student. Limit one grant per exhibit. Family Medicine Congressional Conference (Washington DC)

Each year the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the Organizations of Academic Family Medicine (OAFM) jointly sponsor the Family Medicine Congressional Conference in Washington DC. The conference usually is held mid-May every year. Competitive full scholarships are made available to two family medicine residents and two students to attend the conference. The scholarship consists of the lowest coach fare roundtrip ticket to/from Washington DC, hotel accommodations and incidentials while attending the conference. Scholarship deadline usually is the first Friday in April and recipients will be notified by mid-April.

James G. Jones, MD Student Scholarship Program

This program was created as a way for Dr. Jones to demonstrate his continuing commitment to the education of medical students. His yearly donation to the AAFP Foundation supports attendance by one medical student to the annual Political Leadership Institute (PLI) of the American Medical Student Association held in Washington, D.C. Research Skills Training Workshop

Gain an appreciation of the need for research in family practice

the realm of family practice

Rural Kentucky Medical Scholarship Fund

Since 1945, the Fund has provided loans/scholarships to students in medical school in return for designated years of service following the completion of study. The Fund has been restructured from providing loans to awarding grants to those who agree to practice primary care medicine in critically underserved counties of the state.

There are several scholarship programs available to medical students. Please contact the UKCOM Financial Aid office for the latest scholarship program availability. Two scholarship programs that support student's interest in Family Practice are:

Beale Family Practice Scholarships: The scholarship program, established in 1988, is funded by an endowment established by Violet B. Renaker in memory of Dr. Andrew Jackson Beale. Funds from this scholarship are available to students who express interest in family practice.

Renaker-Beale Accelerated Residency Scholars Program This scholarship program, funded through a bequest of Violet B. Renaker, supports students in the Family Practice and Internal Medicine accelerated residency program.

James F. Hile Scholarships: Must demonstrate academic excellence and have an interest in general/family practice.

Edward and Betty Jane Rankin Scholarships: Must be a first-year student, be a resident of Kentucky, demonstrate academic excellence, and have an interest in primary care.

Student Leadership Award

UKCOM students can nominate a senior (4th year) student for the KAFP award. KAFP requires the student to have matched into an accredited Family Practice Residency program. The award is presented at the senior awards banquet. Nominations are accepted November to February. Students who nominate themselves or nominate another are reviewed and voted on by faculty based on student recommendations and other criteria determined by the predoctoral program director.

Here are some of the items students should use when looking to nominate a senior medical student:

(1) Have they been active in the local FMIG group?
(2) Have they served on any medical school, state, or national committees?
(3) Have they served in any leadership roles?
(4) Do they have an excellent academic record?
(5) Have they completed a primary care research project?
(6) Have they received any other primary care awards?
(7) Have they participated in any community service activities?
(8) Are they a role model for your class and others?

Michael Schafer - Pisacano Scholar [2002] (Click here to open & close description.)

Medical Student Michael Schafer is Chosen for Award for Leadership, Community Efforts Oct. 15, 2002 (Lexington, Ky.) -- In his first year of medical school, Michael Schafer, class of 2003, joined a group of students to expand and improve the student-run clinic at the Salvation Army in Lexington. He didn't know this community service project would lead to a reward a couple of years later.

This year, Schafer was honored as a Pisacano Scholar - the first in the college's history. The national honor is named for Nicholas J. Pisacano who actually held many positions at UK, including: member of the Board of Trustees, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, director of continuing medical education at the UK Chandler Medical Center, and assistant to the vice president at the Medical Center. He came to UK in 1962 and was voted UK's most popular professor in 1965.

Pisacano helped the field of family practice become one of the major specialties in medicine. When the American Board of Family Practice was founded in 1969, he became the organization's first executive director and remained so until January 1990.

Schafer was one of only four scholars chosen this year. Pisacano Scholars are physicians-in-training who have chosen family practice as their specialty and have demonstrated leadership skills, academic achievement, and a level of community service.

"I have worked primarily in industry or some type of service capacity for most of my life," Schafer said. "From this I have learned that the most effective way to lead is to be of service. I believe that this type of leadership philosophy and my experiences in leading church ministries and the reorganization of a medical student-run free clinic are part of the reason I was chosen to be a Pisacano Scholar."

With the help of Schafer, UK's medical students were able to raise approximately $70,000 in grants and private donations so services could be expanded at the Salvation Army Student-Run Free Clinic.

Established in 1986, the clinic offers free medical care to residents of the Salvation Army Clinic and others who can't afford care. It's open from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and generally serves up to 10 patients a night. Medical students and an attending physician staff the clinic.

"We didn't want to wait until we graduated to help people," Schafer said. "We saw all of the wonderful things going on at the Salvation Army Clinic and wanted to build on what was already a success story.

"By bringing students on board in the first year, we hope to give them a sense of ownership in the clinic from the start of their medical school career and provide better continuity," Schafer said.

Faculty at UK are not surprised by Schafer's success. "Mike has all the characteristics of being a Nicholas Pisacano Scholar," said Wanda Gonsalves, residency director and assistant professor of family practice in the UK College of Medicine, who helped guide the medical students to the Salvation Army Clinic project. "He is extremely bright, he has excellent leadership skills, with the ability to empower others to achieve the common good for themselves and for the community, and he is genuinely caring," Gonsalves said. "I can't think of one more deserving."

After graduating with a bachelor of science degree in biology from Northern Kentucky University, Schafer was a minister for a year in his hometown. Before going to medical school, Schafer also worked for five years as a senior research associate with Proctor & Gamble, where he was the co-inventor of four patents. For his efforts, Schafer was awarded the community service award from the UK College of Medicine. In addition, he assisted UK's residency program director in developing a community/service-learning elective, the first of its kind for UK.

He has authored a number of presentations, including co-authoring a proposal to the Kentucky Legislature last year to obtain funding for a family practice faculty member to work with the medical students at the Student-Run Free Clinic and the Kentucky Free Clinic Association.

Schafer and other Pisacano Scholars will meet with some of the best-known leaders in family practice during his last year of medical school and during his residency.

In the future, Schafer wants to complete his residency in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area and practice near his hometown in Alexandria, Ky.
