Dr.
Elder is Director of Behavioral Medicine for the Department of Family
and Community Medicine. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology
from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center - Dallas and
served a fellowship in pain management and neuropsychology at
Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.
Family Medicine has a long history of successfully integrating
behavioral sciences for the benefit of patients. The family physician is knowledgeable about the role of psychological and
social factors in physical health and able to apply behavioral
principles to improve physical health and illness. The family physician
is also able to recognize and treat mental disorders and use
communication and therapeutic techniques that promote patient welfare
and emotional well being. Residents and medical students receive
training on behavioral medicine principles, diagnosis and treatment of
mental disorders, working with families, personal stress management,
physician-patient relationships, etc. Dr. Elder receives faculty and
resident referrals to treat patients and families with a variety of
psychological difficulties including mental, psychophysiological,
somatoform and health behavior disorders
Since 2000, Dr. Elder has been awarded, as principal or co-principal
investigator, in excess of 4 million dollars in grant funds. He is
Principal Investigator of the Department's five year, National
Institutes of Health, Integrative Care Curriculum Development Project.
In this project, the UK Colleges of Medicine and Health Sciences are
creating curriculum to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration. Dr.
Elder serves on federal advisory panels on interdisciplinary care and
the Kentucky Board of Examiners in Psychology. He is the author of a
wide variety of articles and texts on behavioral medicine and science
including recent publications in Currents in Family Medicine, Griffiths’
Five Minute Clinical Consult and Family Medicine Clinics of North
America.
