In October 2002, Dr. Casey joined the UK Department of Family and
Community Medicine as professor and vice-chair of the East KY Campus and
also served as the director of the East Kentucky Family Medicine
Residency Program until February 2007. In November 2005, she became
director of the UK Center for Excellence in Rural Health and continues
to serve as vice-chair of the UK Department of Family and Community
Medicine, East KY Campus.
Dr. Casey had previously been in solo practice in Pikeville Kentucky.
She is the founder of the Pike County Domestic Violence Board, Inc., and
worked on developing the “Domestic Violence Shelter Safe Place” in Pike
County. Dr. Casey served as a member on the Commonwealth of Kentucky,
Governor’s Task Force on Domestic Violence Crime, 1993—2000 and was a
member of the Governor’s Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse,
2000—2002. In 2003, she implemented the Hazard Medical Education
Foundation, Inc. Dr. Casey is actively involved and on numerous
committees with the American Academy of Family Physicians, Kentucky
Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Kentucky
Medical Association, Pike County Medical Society and Perry County
Medical Society and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education. In 2006, she was inducted as president of the Kentucky
Medical Association and president-elect of the Kentucky Academy of
Family Physicians.
Dr. Casey has earned the AMA Physician Recognition Award several times
and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She has
received numerous awards for academic medicine, community involvement
and patient advocacy issues.
Dr. Casey’s special interests involve domestic violence issues,
adolescent medicine, diabetes, and end-of-life and palliative care. She
implemented a new end-of-life and palliative care curriculum during the
residents’ 2004-2005 academic year.
