As part of their
Community Medicine rotation, residents can expect an
introduction to the various community agencies, and
the rotation is capped by the ultimate experience in
community/occupational medicine--a tour of an
underground coal mine! Residents journey four miles underground to develop a
greater appreciation of the occupational stresses
faced by the underground coal miner. |

At the end of the academic year, Hazard ARH Regional
Medical Center hosts a dinner in honor of our
resident graduates. Faculty, residents, staff and
guests attend this celebration at the First Federal
Center on the campus of Hazard Community and
Technical College. Traditionally, Mayor Gorman or his
representative proclaims the graduates Dukes or
Duchesses of Hazard and presents the graduates with a
beautiful certificate and a key to the city. The East
Kentucky Osteopathic Interns receive their Internship
Certificates from the Appalachian Osteopathic
Postgraduate Training Institute Consortium. The
graduates receive their University of Kentucky,
College of Medicine, East Kentucky Family Medicine
Residency completion certificates and certificate
from the American Academy of Family Practice and a
residency rocking chair. Awards are also presented to
the Primary Care Preceptor of the Year, the Medical
Specialty Preceptor of the Year and the Dr. Leelamma
Varkey Award for Intern of the Year is presented.
