Macular Degeneration Research at UK

Macular degeneration(AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 65. It is a deterioration of the central vision area of the retina that occurs with aging. In some patients (approximately 10 percent), blood vessel growth occurs in the area of degeneration leading to a blistering of the retina and more rapid and severe vision loss. Dr. Andrew Pearson was an investigator in trials evaluating photodynamic therapy for macular degeneration.

Dr. J. Ambati has a lab dedicated to determining the underlying mechanism responsible for the growth of the blood vessels and evaluating new treatment strategies for them. We have a group of researchers focused on angiogenesis, which is the cause of the majority of vision loss in patients with AMD. For more information contact Michele Reg at (859) 323-5868.
