The educational objectives of the Department
of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences are to enable medical students and graduates to confidently
and correctly diagnose, treat, or refer patients with ocular diseases
or ocular manifestations of systemic diseases.
Instruction is offered in the ophthalmologic aspects of the basic science disciplines
including optics, anatomy, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, pathology, microbiology,
immunology, and pharmacology. Instruction in the basic sciences is integrated
with the clinical disciplines including refraction, pediatric ophthalmology,
glaucoma, the relationships between ocular and systemic diseases, neuro-ophthalmology,
corneal disease, vitreo-retinal disease, ophthalmic plastic surgery, ocular
inflammatory disease, and medical and surgical therapeutics.
The department has a significant teaching commitment in the first year neurosciences
course and during the junior clinical neurosciences rotation. Clinical and
research electives are available in the third and fourth year. The electives
offered for medical students and residents emphasize clinical teaching in which
the student works with the faculty and residents. |
