Resident Program Handbook

Welcome from the Program Director and Department Chair

We appreciate your interest in the residency program in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. We believe we have an outstanding residency experience and look forward to sharing information about our program with you.

The residency program began in 1990 with one resident per year and five faculty members. We have grown steadily since that beginning and now have eight full-time clinical faculty members and two PhD faculty members. All clinical areas of otolaryngology are covered and we have NIH funded research in our department. The teaching program is centered on providing residents with all the tools needed to pass their board exams successfully and to enter fellowship or practice with a firm understanding of the full scope of our specialty.

Without a doubt, the biggest strength of our program is the operative experience. Our residents operate one-on-one with a faculty member on virtually every case. A progressive experience leads to competence and confidence and the surgical volume is outstanding. In addition, we are quite proud of the fact that 100 percent of the residents completing the program since its inception have become board certified in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. Our residents are successful in fellowship training, single private practice, group practice, and research. Our faculty are dedicated to the highest level of patient care and resident education.

We welcome your interest in our program and look forward to hearing from you further.

Raleigh Jones, MD, FACS
Chair, Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery
