The EMS and research curricula are incorporated throughout the residency program. As a PGY-1, the residents are expected to ride with the Lexington-Fayette County Fire Department paramedic crews as well as with an EMS based paramedic squad in Berea, Kentucky. While flying with the UK-based aeromedical crew is not required, it is highly encouraged during the month. There are requirements to attend aeromedical and ground prehospital Q/A meetings as well as provide educational opportunities to the paramedics involved through a prepared lecture. The EMS curriculum focuses on disaster medicine exposure with requirements to ride with the Lexington-Fayette County Rescue Response crew which responds to all major calls including any HAZMAT incidents, dressing out with the UKED SORT (special operations response teams) personnel each month, and participating in any disaster drills that occur during the month. There are assigned readings that focus on ground and aeromedical EMS and disaster medicine. A test at the end of the first year is taken to assess adequate knowledge in each area. The course director is Dr. Julia Martin, a faculty member in the department of emergency medicine, who has extensive training in the field of EMS. She has served on the state EMS board and was the medical director for the UK aeromedical program for several years.
