NETT Hub RESEARCH

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Kentucky is proud to have a rapidly expanding research division. The department is truly honored to be one of 17 hub sites across the US for the Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials, NETT network. Research with in the NETT is funded by the National Institutes of Health National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for the purpose of finding new emergency treatments for devastating diseases such as stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury and status epilepticus.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is currently enrolling subjects in two NETT studies, Albumin In Acute Stroke (ALIAS) and Rapid Anticonvulsant Medication Prior To Arrival Trial (RAMPART) and preparing to enroll subjects in another NETT study, Progesterone for Traumatic Brain Injury an Experimental Clinical Trial (ProTECT). Because neurological emergencies often have a very short window between onset and critical treatment, the Exception From Informed Consent trial design is an integral part of two of the current NETT studies, RAMPART and ProTECT. The NETT network offers a unique opportunity to make significant progress in the emergency treatment of neurological disorders and the University of Kentucky Department of Emergency Medicine is extremely proud to be a key center in this ground breaking research.

Others area of research focus with in the department include Emergency Ultrasonography, Pediatric Injury Prevention, Emergency Medical Services and Cardiovascular diseases. Researchers with in the Department of Emergency Medicine are currently collaborating with researchers in Cardiology, Dentistry, Trauma Surgery, Neuro-Critical Care, Neurology and Neurosurgery. The Department of Emergency Medicine employs one full-time senior research coordinator, one full-time research assistant and a part-time EMS research coordinator.
