Introduction 4th Year Rotation Syllabus Grading Clinical Activity Research Links

Clinical Activity

100 hours of clinical duty time in maximum 8 hour blocks of time separated by at least 8 hours of non-clinical time. These shifts should be a mixture of day, evening and night shifts and must include two weekend (Saturday or Sunday shifts.) Non-traditional shifts of less than eight hours are allowed pending course coordinator approval. EMS ride along make count as one 12-hour shift.

In an average 4-week (28 day) rotation this would mean:

  • 11 x 8 hours shifts
  • 5 Days for student specific teaching and skill stations
  • 2 Days for Testing (written and oral)
  • 1 Day (EMS ride along shift)

Clinical Shifts

Schedules for clinical shifts must be coordinated between the student and the preceptors. A list of preceptors with their addresses and phone numbers have been provided to you. Students doing the rotation off site must contact AHEC Office thirty days in advance for assistance with housing and transportation needs.

For students rotating at the University of Kentucky, a master schedule of clinical duties will be developed on the first day of orientation in concert with the course coordinator and the students.

Although student requests will be considered, students will be given a variety of shifts including days, nights and weekends with an attempt to make the schedule equitable and allowing only one to two students at a time in the emergency department to maximize clinical educational opportunities and provide appropriate supervision and instruction.

Students are expected to be a professional during their clinical rotations. Each student will provide evidence of having started five intravenous lines during the rotation. Each student will provide evidence of having placed at least one nasogastric tube and at least one Foley urinary catheter. A sign off sheet will be provided to document this. Get these accomplished early in the rotation. An evaluation form will be provided to the student to give to their preceptor. It is the student's responsibility to seek feedback on an on-going basis of his or her clinical performance during the month from the preceptor. If you are rotating off site make sure your preceptor has the copy of the evaluation form and remind the preceptor to return them promptly.
