1990: Dr. Steve Stapczynski is appointed chair of the department in July.
1990: The ED is moved to its current location on the ground floor of
the critical care center in August
1994: Dr. Keith Stone is recruited as residency director.
1995: The RRC approves the EM residency
1995: The Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment service is established.
1996: First EM residency class starts July 1.
1999: First EM residency of the new residency graduates June 30.
2002: Dr. Steve Stapczynski steps down as chair to pursue research interests in the department.
2002: Dr. Keith Stone is appointed interim chair.
2003: Dr. Roger Humphries is appointed residency director on Jan 1.
2003: Dr. Keith Stone leaves the University of Kentucky in April to become the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Scott and White in Temple, TX
2003: Dr. Roger Humphries is appointed interim chair May 1.
2004: Dr. Steve Stapczynski leaves the University of Kentucky in April to become the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ.
2004: Dr. Roger Humphries is appointed as chair July 1
The current members of the Department of Emergency Medicine would like to acknowledge the outstanding contributions that the “founding fathers” of the department and residency, Dr. Jack Carey, Dr. Steve Stapczynski and Dr. Keith Stone, have made to the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Kentucky. It is because of their wisdom, dedication and perseverance that a strong department and an excellent emergency medicine program exist today at UK.
