About UK

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine has enjoyed a reputation of progressive innovation since its creation in 1960. It was the site of:

  • The development of the first vena caval filter
  • The first triple cardiac valve placement in the U.S.
  • The discovery of the first family in the U.S. with antithrombin III deficiency
  • The first identification in the U.S. of carcinoembryonic antigen in ovarian cancer
  • The first use in the U.S. of imaging cancers using radiolabelled CEA antibodies
  • The first Department of Behavioral Science in a medical school in the U.S.

Always a center of excellence in tertiary care and research, the University is also recognized as a site of superior training in primary care. In a recent national poll, the UK Chandler Medical Center was ranked among the top 20 centers in the country for training in primary care medicine.
