Welcome
Welcome to the University of Kentucky Internal
Medicine Residency web site! We are excited that you are interested in our
program. As you look over our
program’s various aspects, I hope you recognize the many unique aspects, which
provide a wonderful training atmosphere.
Overall, our program strives to create physicians who are both well
versed in the current evidence and imbued with the compassion to care for
patients.
Teaching Commitment
UK has a long tradition of excellence in medical education, and we are honored
to carry on that spirit. Our
faculty members understand the essential roles they play in education and
development of our medical students and residents. Our education
curriculum is structured to provide a variety o teaching methods and
opportunities, including morning report, general noon conferences,
level-specific conferences, weekly board preparation quizzes, online modules and
much more. Please see our Educational Conferences section [link] for more details.
Training Diversity
We have a great diversity of patients among our multiple training sites. On our inpatient ward rotations, UK-Chandler offers all of the advantages of a tertiary (and quaternary) referral center, UK-Good Samaritan offers the challenges of a community and a secondary referral hospital and the VA-Lexington offers the great range of medical problems found in our military veterans. In our ambulatory clinics, we have an exceptional patient mix; including those with insurance, Medicare and/or Medicaid as well as those we provide charity care. Our combination training sites ensures that all of our graduates are exposed to the widest range of medical problems from the routine to the complex.
State of the Art Facilities
This is a very
exciting time at UK. We are in the midst
of one of the largest periods of growth for any academic medical center.
Our medical campus is undergoing a complete transformation.
The internal medicine clinics moved to a brand new space in 2009, which
provides us with a state-of-the-art facility for our continuity clinics.
Most significantly, the brand new 1.2 million square foot UK Albert B.
Chandler Hospital [http://www.ukhealthcare.uky.edu/new/index.asp]
has opened and new patient care floors are being added every few months.
The emergency department opened in July 2010, the lobby and public areas
in April 2011 and two patient care floors in May 2011.
Camaraderie
Year after
year, most applicants remember the resident camaraderie more than any other
aspect of our program. Our residents
work hard, but also enjoy the many benefits Lexington has to offer.
Our close-knit, family atmosphere is one of the main reasons that so many
of our graduates choose to join our faculty or continue their education at UK!
I hope you will consider interviewing with us, you will be glad you did.
Although residency can be a challenging road with its share of some hard times,
we are here to help you in the journey and ensure that you are a success in
whatever career path you choose!
