2008-2009 Student Financial Information

The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry is responsible for the management of over seven million dollars in student financial aid programs for doctoral (DMD) and graduate (MS) students enrolled in the College of Dentistry.  Unlike most dental schools that rely on a main campus or medical center student financial aid office for support, the college manages its own program and as a result can provide more individualized service to its students.

The college is committed to assisting eligible students in receiving financial aid (scholarships, loans, and federal work-study) to help cover expenses associated with attending dental school.  Although the college cannot guarantee that all financial need be met, the Financial Aid Coordinator assists student dentists to the limit of loan and scholarship funds under college management.  Student dentist may need to call on other sources of aid, if necessary, to supplement their annual financial aid award.

Approximately ninety-five percent (95%) of all of the college’s doctoral and graduate students receive some type of financial assistance.  The following philosophy is determined by the Federal Government for those programs it oversees:

Cost of Attendance (Approved Student Budget) minus the Expected Family Contribution
(determined by a government calculation from the FAFSA application) equals the Financial Eligibility.
This eligibility is reduced by scholarships or fellowships, and the remainder may be covered by student loans
up to the limit allowed by law, as long as the Cost of Attendance has not been met.

While each professional student is considered independent, parental information is required of those who wish to apply for all types of financial aid, including some other low interest loans (Health Professions and Perkins Loans).  Students who will be applying for subsidized and/or unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans only, do not need to submit parental information.

Below are the ESTIMATED expenses for 2008-2009.  This information should assist you in planning for the next academic year.  You will note that there has been an increase in both resident and non-resident tuition, as well as the mandatory fees required by the University.  While the tuition figures are higher than last year’s, they are comparable to other similar institutions.  Resident and non-resident tuition and costs at our benchmark schools of dentistry also continue to rise annually and are often higher than for the same programs at UK.  Consider the costs associated with your dental education as an investment in your future – an investment that usually pays great dividends during the course of your career.

Although the college follows an academic year schedule rather than one by semester, students are not expected to pay their tuition and university fees (student activity fee, student center fee, health service fee, etc.), or College of Dentistry fee (instruments, PTS (sterilization), etc.) all at once.  These expenses may be paid in half in August and half in January.  Deadline dates for payment are August 22 and January 22 of each year.

Applicants for 2008-2009 financial aid should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 15th, or as soon as possible thereafter.  The Financial Aid Office wants to insure that you are given every consideration for aid, so please apply early.
