Glenn Telling, Ph.D.

Background:

Glenn has an excellent background with his education from Oxford and Carnegie Mellon and a post-doctoral with Nobel Laureate Stan Prusiner. He joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1999.

He has gained considerable national and international recognition for his work in prion disorders. Strong examples of his recognition are as follows. He is a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors of the world's most prestigious journal, Science. He is chair of the United States Food and Drug Administration Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee. He is an advisor to the World Health Organization on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. He is a member of the NIA Neurodegenerative Disorders and Glial Biology Study Section. The Institute of Biological Sciences and Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University, China has named him an honorary visiting professor. He is a member of the United Kingdom Food Standards Agency Review Panel of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies Program. These examples represent only a few of the honors and recognition he has received recently.

Research Interests:

Glenn's research is in the broad area of pathogenesis of prion diseases. He has published a seminal article in Science, 2006 on prions in skeletal muscle in deer with chronic wasting disease. In addition to Science, Glenn publishes in very prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, PNAS, and Journal of Biological Chemistry. He has been asked to write review articles for Lancet Neurology and the New England Journal of Medicine recently. His work has led to strong peer approval as determined by his grant funding. He presently has 2 NIH grants and is co-investigator on a Department of Defense grant and principal investigator on a US Department of Agriculture grant.
