General Clinical Trials in Aging and Gerontology Affiliated with the University
of Kentucky Alzheimer's Disease Center/Sanders-Brown Center on Aging
- Exploration of visual attention and visual working memory in
normal aging
- Larry Gottlob, Ph.D. http://www.uky.edu/AS/Psychology/faculty/lgottlob.html
serves as the principal investigator
- Funding: NIA R01AG20860
- UK IRB# 01-0540
- Computerized tasks using only 2 response buttons (you don't need
to be computer savvy to participate) take less than an hour to complete
- Research subjects include college students and older adults between
the ages of 60 and 75. In many of our projects, we compare the performances
across age groups to understand some of the basic mechanisms underlying
cognition
- For more information or to enroll call the Visual Attention Lab
at (859) 257-6514
- Nutritional Intake and Proinflammatory Cytokine Activity in
Community Dwelling Older Adults http://www.mc.uky.edu/Nursing/research/faculty/Grants/lennie1.html
- Terrie Lennie Ph.D., R.N. http://www.mc.uky.edu/Nursing/research/faculty/Grants/lennie1.html
and Debra Moser, D.N.Sc., M.N., R.N., F.A.A.N, http://www.mc.uky.edu/Nursing/bios/moser.html
serve as the principal investigators
- Funding: Gill Endowment
- UK IRB# 04-0622
- This research study examines the relationships between nutritional
intake and inflammation in healthy older adults
- For more information or to enroll call Rebecca Moser at 859-323-6838
- Oral Infections: Dietary Regulation of Local and Systemic Inflammatory
Responses
- Dolph Dawson III, D.M.D., http://www.mc.uky.edu/cohr/Dolph%20Dawson.htm
serves as the principal investigator
- Funding: NIH/NCRR
- UK IRB# 04-0339 F1V
- Chronic oral infection and inflammation from periodontal disease
may have a negative impact on systemic conditions such as diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, preterm/low birthweight infants, pulmonary
infections. Omega-3-fatty acids found in fish oil may contribute to
the prevention and treatment of these diseases by reducing inflammation
and improving the immune response
- For more information or to enroll call the Delta Dental of Kentucky

at (859) 323-4923
- Thought, stress, and immunity in older adults
- Suzanne Segerstrom, Ph.D. http://www.uky.edu/AS/Psychology/faculty/segerstr.html
serves as the principal investigator
- Funding: NIA AG026307-R01
- UK IRB# 05-0956-F3R
- Free flu shots are provided for participationv
- For more information or to enroll call Abbey Roach at 859-257-2207
- Effect of vocal function exercises on vocal fold bowing/glottal
configuration in the aged male population
- This study is being conducted by Dr. Joseph Stemple, Ph.D., CCC-SLP,
ASHAF http://www.mc.uky.edu/CommDisorders/stemple.htm
- Funding:
- UK IRB# 06-0456-P3G
- Due to the gender specific nature of the scientific question under
study, this study is only open to male participants, in contrast to
our other studies which actively encourage participation by all genders,
races, and ethnicities
- For more information or to enroll call Dr. Joseph Stemple at (859)

- Establishing normative references for standard acoustic and
physiologic voice measures from vocally healthy adults
- This study is being conducted by Christina Schaefer, a student in
Communication Disorders working with Dr. Joseph Stemple, Ph.D., CCC-SLP,
ASHAF http://www.mc.uky.edu/CommDisorders/stemple.htm
- Funding:
- UK IRB# Pending
- For more information or to enroll call Dr. Joseph Stemple at (859)

- Natural Immunity in Healthy Aging
- Discourse Processing in Healthy Aging:
- Currently Enrolling!
- This study investigates the impact of memory changes in healthy aging on discourse activities such as telling a story, describing a picture and explaining a procedure.
- Participants should be between the ages of 60 and 90, have normal (or corrected to normal) hearing and vision and have no history of neurological disease.
- Subjects will be compensated
.
- For more information call Dr. Capilouto at (859) 321-1100 ext 80555.
- Immunotherapy for Alzheimer’s disease:
- Enrolling early 2008!
- Intravenous immunoglobulin has been shown in preliminary studies to potentially slow or even stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
- This upcoming trial will further investigate the disease modifying properties of IVIg in subjects with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease over a 1 1/2 year period.
- The use of antibodies in this fashion represents one of the first attempts at passive immunization or vaccination for Alzheimer’s disease.
- For information call Diana at (859) 257-1412 ext 234
