THIRD YEAR PEDIATRIC CURRICULUM
Academic Year 1999-2000
Women's, Maternal, and Child Health Clerkship (MD830)
Women's, Maternal, and Child Health (WMCH) is a twelve week combination rotation encompassing the disciplines of Obstetric, Gynecology and Hospital-based Pediatrics. This rotation has been designed to provide an opportunity for students to follow the cycle of pregnancy, birth and neonatal care. In addition, the clerkship will focus on gynecology and the reproductive problems of women, as well as children's health complications which lead to hospitalization. These distinct disciplines will be integrated by a series of seminars about issues critical to the health and well-being of women and children.
Primary Care Clerkship (MD-834)
This rotation in ambulatory settings consists of four weeks each of family practice, general internal medicine and general pediatrics. It is an integrated "team taught" course, involving exposure to a variety of practice settings with an emphasis on problem-based learning and the use of the computer for literature searching and information storage. Four weeks of the rotation are spent at one of the Area Health Education Centers in rural Kentucky.
Ambulatory Pediatrics: Your clinical responsibilities will occur in several ambulatory settings: the General Pediatrics Clinic in the Kentucky Clinic at the University of Kentucky, selected pediatric subspecialty clinics at the University, the Family Care Center on Red Mile Road, the Baby Health Clinic on Harrodsburg Road and the Nathaniel Mission Pediatric Clinic on DeRoode Street. Some students will be assigned to one day regional clinics in General Pediatrics or one of the subspecialty clinics. More specific instructions about these clinics will be provided at that time. Some of you will choose a community based experience in a practicing Pediatrician's office in a rural community where you will remain for the entire four week experience.
