THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
At the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital, our dedicated
staff and our advanced technology work hand-in-hand to serve
you. Established in 1997, UK Children's Hospital is a 44-bed in-patient
center with an out-patient area; a 50-bed Level III neonatal nursery: and a
12-bed state-of-the art pediatric intensive care unit.
As an integral part of the UK Chandler Medical Center, University
of Kentucky Children's Hospital consolidates our extensive array
of comprehensive pediatric services under one roof.
Work began on the UK Children's Hospital within the University Hospital in the summer of 1995 and was completed August 1997. This represented a 40,000 square foot, $12 million addition. Some of the features of the Children's Hospital include: a separate entrance; a new 12 bed PICU; a remodeled 50 bed NICU organized in a modular format; 44 acute care (non-ICU) rooms, with 85% of these being private; a 26 bed normal newborn nursery; a separate area containing 8-10 beds for 23 hour admissions/observation; children's playrooms; and expanded family consultation and waiting rooms. The new facility also includes an expanded resident lounge, resident on-call/shower/locker rooms, conference rooms, a pediatric library, Chief Resident's office, and residency coordinator's office.
Inpatient admissions each year usually number in the 6,200 range, with approximately 3,100 non-ICU floor admissions, 600 PICU admissions, 900 NICU admissions, and 1,600 admissions to the newborn nursery. Patients are admitted by pediatrics, pediatric surgery and the other surgical subspecialties, neurology, and pediatric dentistry.
