Adult Congenital Heart Disease

The University of Kentucky has a long-standing tradition in the care of patients with congenital heart diseases. Dr. Jacqueline Noonan and other pediatric cardiologists at UK have cared for children with congenital heart diseases for many decades. As adults, those patients require long-term follow-up. Our Adult Congenital Heart Disease program was established in 2006 and is small but growing. Our vision is to provide fellows with high quality clinical and educational exposure to this expanding population of patients.

Cardiology fellows have a one-month rotation in pediatric cardiology where they have the opportunity to interact with experienced pediatric cardiologists in the care of children with congenital heart disease. Fellows attend the weekly case management meeting, observe congenital echocardiograms and visit the operating room during complex procedures. Throughout the three years of fellowship, cardiology fellows are exposed to congential heart disease in adults in the hospital and with lectures about the specific issues of these patients. Also strong emphasis is placed on development of clinical skills, such as physical examination ,auscultation, ECG and analysis of chest x-rays. Cardiac MRI and CT are emphasized for the educational experience of the fellows as well.
