Echocardiography

In the echocardiography laboratory at the Gill Heart Institute, over 1000 transthoracic echocardiograms and 35 transesophageal echocardiograms are performed every month. Trainees have the opportunity to work with certified technologists to obtain transthoracic echocardiographic images at both Gill Heart Institute and VA, and to read digital images with attendings. Fellows can also practice their transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiographic skills on a life-sized simulator. During the third year of fellowship, trainees perform transesophageal echocardiograms under the guidance of an attending. There is opportunity for cardiovascular medicine fellows to obtain a comprehensive certification in echocardiography.
