Cardiac Catheterization

In the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, the general cardiovascular medicine fellows will work one-on-one with interventional attendings both at Gill Heart Institute and the VA Medical Center. A combined average of 3000+ cardiac catheterizations, 1000+ coronary interventions, 300+ peripheral angiographies, and 100+ peripheral interventions are performed yearly. Training is focused on:
  • Right heart catheterization
  • Left heart catheterization
  • Selective coronary angiography
  • Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation device placement
  • Arteriotomy closure devices
Cardiovascular medicine fellows also have the opportunity to participate in other procedures including:
  • Coronary interventions (angioplasty, stent placement, rotablation)
  • Fractional flow reserve measurements
  • Intravascular ultrasound
  • Pulmonary angiography
  • Pericardiocentesis and drain placement
  • Intracardiac echocardiography
  • Advanced congenital interventions (PFO/ASD/VSD closures)
  • Valvular interventions (mitral/aortic valvuloplasty/TAVI)
  • Peripheral interventions (carotid stenting, alcohol septal ablation, IVC filter placements)
The opportunity also exists to participate in pediatric catheterization procedures during elective time.
