Cardiac Care Unit

During the cardiac care unit rotation, special emphasis is placed on care of the acutely ill cardiac patients in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit. Hemodynamic monitoring by means of pulmonary artery balloon catheters, insertion of temporary pacemakers and intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation devices are typically performed by the fellows. With the recent development of the mechanical circulatory support team, the CCU team also takes care of patients with ventricular assist device or on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The CCU team, consist of an attending, a cardiology fellow, 4 medicine residents, a nurse practitioner, and a cardiovascular PharmD specialist. The team takes care of both unit and floor patients. Due to the wide referral base, patients brought in from various parts of the state present with a very broad range of pathophysiology.
