BCH/OBI 812 - DENTAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Blackboard: http://elearning.uky.edu

General Information:

Lecture Notes:  You can access the pertinent notes (usually) two days prior to the scheduled lecture at:  http://www.mc.uky.edu/biochemistry/courses/bch812.  For students who have problems downloading or printing from the web site, copies will also be available from Eric Morrow in b283 in BBSRB.

Purpose and Goals:  This is a 6 credit hour course with the objective of enriching the basic science education of dental students in the fundamental and modern principles of biochemistry.  This component of the curriculum is intended to provide the biochemical background for subsequent courses in microbiology and molecular pharmacology, understanding relevant biochemical concepts when reading scientific journals during your dental career, as well as a solid preparation for the Dental Board examination. The course will be based on the excellent and "user-friendly" textbook: Biochemistry (Sixth Edition) by Berg, Tymoczko andStryer (publisher-W. H. Freeman and Co.)

Performance Evaluation:  The student's performance in this course will be determined by averaging the grades in four equally-weighted 2 hour examinations (see schedule for dates).  The grading standards will be:

A = 90-100%

B+ = 83-89%

B = 75-82%

C = 60-74%

E = Below 60%

            While the ranges indicated above will the primary basis for determining the grade, adjustments may be made arbitrarily depending on the final distribution of exam scores.

Code of professional conduct:

      It must be stressed that your conduct in all aspects of BCH/OBI 812 is governed by the rules and criteria stated in Student Rights and Responsibilities of the University of Kentucky and the College Code of Professional and Academic Responsibility (CCPAR). Any infringements upon these rules and criteria will be dealt with as also stated in Student Rights and Responsibilities and the College Code of Professional and Academic Responsibility.
