The University of Kentucky, Department of Behavioral Science in collaboration with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and the Explorium of Lexington (science museum) was awarded a five year grant from the National Center for Research Resources, NIH (Grant Number: R25-RR0233004) to encourage minority and underrepresented middle school students to consider careers in biomedical science. The first cohort of students was recruited in summer 2007.  Currently, 38 students and 10 teachers at three Fayette County middle schools are participating in the program.

Brief Description

Through this brand new project entitled “TRY-IT” (Translating Research to Youth through Information Technology) a special emphasis will be placed on helping students use technology to better understand health science. This novel approach using interactive 3D visualization will serve as a “hook” or engagement point where students can go on to learn more information about biomedical science, technology, and human health. As students become better educated about health, it is anticipated that their science literacy will be increased and in turn, they will make healthier lifestyle choices.  This is a combined Phase I and II application.  During Phase I, targeted students, their teachers, school counselors and parents will participate in a two-year, year round science-enrichment program to increase the likelihood that young people will consider careers in biomedical sciences and to increase their awareness and interest in clinical research studies and trials.  Concurrently, the project team will also work with the Explorium to create a traveling exhibit involving interactive 3D models related to human biology.  Although this aspect of the program is directed to the general public the students/teachers researcher teams will assist the Explorium in developing, testing and refining the exhibit.  During Phase II, materials to support the 3D exhibit that are developed by the student/teacher/researcher teams will be disseminated to all middle school students in Kentucky coordinated through the local science museum.

GOALS

  1. Increase the interest and knowledge of minority and underrepresented middle school students ages 11 to 15 in biomedical science, clinical trials and scientific uses of technology.
  2. Evaluate changes in student interest, knowledge, skills and changes in career paths in biomedical science.
  3. Design and distribute the TRY-IT curriculum which includes a technology-rich exhibit for K-12 students.
