Research Description
Lisa Shannon is an assistant professor in the Department of Behavioral Science with an appointment at the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research. Her research interests are in the areas of substance use/abuse, victimization, and criminal justice system involvement among women with a particular interest in pregnant women. Dr. Shannon is the Co-Principal Investigator of an evaluation study focused on using a modified case management approach to provide screening, prevention services, referrals for substance abuse assessments and treatment, as well as support for continued prenatal care on a high risk group of pregnant women. She is also the Study Director and Co-Principal Investigator for a statewide evaluation of a program serving children with severe emotional and behavioral disturbance. She has previously worked on a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) studying alcohol, violence, mental health and health status among rural and urban women with protective orders, as well a statewide outcome evaluation of the Drug Court program.
2008 Accomplishments
In 2008, Dr. Shannon submitted six grants: Pregnant and Postpartum Women (PPW) grant to the Center on Substance Abuse Treatment in conjunction with the Jefferson Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center (JADAC). Role: Evaluator. Status: unfunded. two Treatment Drug Court grants to the Center on Substance Abuse Treatment in conjunction with the Administrative Office of the Courts. Role: Evaluator. Status: Funded (both). UK awarded $120,000 per year for three years to conduct the evaluations. Two Treatment for the Homeless grants to the Center on Substance Abuse Treatment; one in conjunction with the Community Action Council, the other in conjunction with Pennyroyal Center. Role: Evaluator. Status: Funded (one – Community Action Council). UK awarded $50,000 per year for five years to conduct the evaluation. R21 to the National Institute on Drug Abuse examining a brief intervention for rural Appalachian pregnant women. Role: Principal Investigator. Status: unscored; positive feedback on the novelty of the topic/population, intervention needs revising. In 2008, Dr. Shannon had five manuscripts published, of which I was the primary author on one. She also have three manuscripts that have been accepted for publication and are forthcoming in 2009, of which she is the first author on two. Additionally, she currently has one manuscript under review which she is the primary author. Dr. Shannon presented a poster at the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD), and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry meetings. She also had an oral presentation at the International Family Violence and Child Victimization Research Conference. She was a co-author on presentations at the: SSWR and CPDD meetings. Also in 2008, she reviewed manuscripts for: International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, Psychology of Women Quarterly, and Substance Abuse: Research and Treatment. She was named a consulting editor for Psychology of Women Quarterly.
