Research Description

Lisa Shannon is an assistant professor in the Department of Behavioral Science with an appointment at the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research. Her research interests are in the areas of substance use/abuse, victimization, and criminal justice system involvement among women with a particular interest in pregnant women.  Dr. Shannon is the Co-Principal Investigator of an evaluation study focused on using a modified case management approach to provide screening, prevention services, referrals for substance abuse assessments and treatment, as well as support for continued prenatal care on a high risk group of pregnant women. She is also the Study Director and Co-Principal Investigator for a statewide evaluation of a program serving children with severe emotional and behavioral disturbance. She has previously worked on a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) studying alcohol, violence, mental health and health status among rural and urban women with protective orders, as well a statewide outcome evaluation of the Drug Court program.

2009 Accomplishments

In 2009, Dr. Shannon continued to be a productive member of the Department of Behavioral Science.  This year, her focus has primarily been on evaluating the effectiveness of community-based treatment programs for individuals with substance abuse problems. She continued to work on the three Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) projects awarded in 2008.  Two of the evaluation projects are in conjunction with the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts and focus on outcomes associated with service enhancements in rural Drug Courts in Perry and Floyd counties. The third project focuses on evaluating a collaborative Community Treatment Initiative between Community Action Council and Bluegrass Regional Mental Health to provide mental health/substance abuse treatment for homeless individuals in Bourbon, Harrison, and Nicholas counties. Additionally, in 2009 Dr. Shannon received eight new projects. Seven of the projects are funded as part of SAMHSA-awarded grants and focus on evaluating the effectiveness of service enhancements offered in a variety of community treatment settings.  Of those, four are in collaboration with the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts (Drug Court), two are with the Volunteers of America in Los Angeles (i.e., focusing on criminal justice offenders and homeless individuals), and one is with the Hope Center of Lexington (i.e., targeting individuals at-risk for HIV/AIDS).  The eighth project awarded is part of a Bureau of Justice Assistance grant to evaluate the implementation of a misdemeanor drug court program in Clark/Madison counties. Dr. Shannon published three manuscripts, of which she was the primary author on two. She also has two manuscripts that have been accepted for publication and are forthcoming in 2010 of which she is the primary author on one.  Dr. Shannon gave two oral presentations; one at the Addiction Health Services Research Conference, the other at the Council on Social Work Education annual conference.  She reviewed manuscripts for Culture, Health and Sexuality, International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, and Substance Abuse: Research and Treatment.
