Research Interests

The broad goal of research in the Smyth Laboratory is to study the cellular and molecular basis of cardiovascular pathophysiologic processes and then, through creative and innovative approaches, apply that knowledge to improve the diagnosis and therapy of human disease. Our focus is on understanding the interplay between inflammation and thrombosis, and in particular the contribution of blood and vascular cell adhesion and signaling receptors. We apply genetic and pharmacologic strategies in well-characterized animal models of cardiovascular disease with the aim of defining cellular and molecular pathways involved in cardiovascular disease pathophysiology and then test those pathways in clinical studies in humans.
