National AHECs

The Southeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center (SE AHEC), is located in the heart of Appalachian Kentucky, an area that is rich in scenic beauty and cultural traditions.  The primary office of the Southeast Kentucky AHEC is located in Hazard, Kentucky.  The Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College serves as the host institution.  Additional offices are located at McDowell ARH in McDowell, Lee County Vocational School in Beattyville,  and at Southeast KY Community & Technical College in Cumberland.  A full-service medical library is located at the ARH Regional Medical Center in Hazard. The counties served by the Southeast Kentucky AHEC are:  Bell, Breathitt, Clay, Floyd, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Owsley, Perry, Pike, and Wolfe.

The 16 county service area includes some of the most beautiful, rugged terrain in Kentucky, with steep mountains, narrow valleys, and sparkling lakes and streams.  The population of the area is approximately 407,000.  The boundaries of the region include the Virginia and West Virginia state lines in the east and the Tennessee state line in the south.  Nature lovers, hikers, boaters, and fishing enthusiasts enjoy the region's many natural assets, such as the Daniel Boone National Forest and three state resort parks.

The predominately rural area contains several larger towns, such as Hazard, Middlesboro, Prestonsburg, and Pikeville that boast urban amenities.  The region is home to fifteen hospitals and numerous clinics, which offer the latest in healthcare.  Coal mining remains a major economic force, although healthcare, education, and the service industries are increasingly important to the economy.

In an effort to recruit and retain needed health professionals, the Southeast Kentucky AHEC offers a variety of clinical training opportunities for medical, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and allied health students in area hospitals, clinics, and private practices.  A full-service medical library located at the Hazard office provides the latest in medical information to students and practitioners in the region.  The Southeast Kentucky AHEC provides a variety of continuing education programs for health care providers in the region, frequently utilizing the two telemedicine networks that serve the region.  In addition, health career awareness and health education programs are offered in area schools.

The National AHEC Program's mission is to enhance access to quality health care, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of health care professionals through community/academic partnerships.  The Southeast Kentucky AHEC is a part of the Kentucky AHEC Program, a state funded, collaborative effort between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.  There are eight AHEC Centers spread out across the Commonwealth, each offering specialized programs and services unique to their region, by working closely with the universities, community medical facilities, and local health professionals.
